No split tail gate then.
It's seeming less and less likely that the D4 replacement will have one
Having spent much time over the last 9.5 years, sheltering from rain, making hot drinks, cooking, eating, standing and just sitting on the tail gate of a Discovery, it's a feature I'd be loathed to be without.

Personally I'd be glad if it's gone. Lesser of two evils
However, I thought there was somewhere on't interweb a JLR preview /concept car that had a 1-piece tailgate plus a slide-out 'lower bit' - the implication being that this would probably make it to production ?

Gratuitous tailgate pic taken at the side of the road in Finnish Lapland in June . Big, very big step backwards.

a big loss - we use the lower tailgate all the time. - putting on muddy boots, somewhere to sit when donning/doffing wetsuits,
A great feature of the Disco although it does sometimes make loading more difficult - but sometimes easier. would be a real shame to lose it completely. Also Gone : MY14 D4 SDV6 HSE : Barolo Black + Almond
Sadly Gone : MY08 D3 TDV6 HSE : Stornoway + Alpaca + Privacy + BAS Remap
Bit of a personal matter though; to me, it's quite the opposite. With dogs, boots, horsey stuff etc., it's a feature that would be sorely missed. If I can't access something at the front of the boot, I can simply fold down a rear seat.
I'd really like to see a clever system where the lower tailgate can retract out of the way, but then I also think I'd rather they kept things simple, strong and robust. An alternative slide out platform might be an option, but it still can't match the usefulness as a barrier to keep dogs and stuff in the boot.
One thing's for sure, if it weren't for the split tailgate, I wouldn't be putting bikes on the roof. Some kind of split is a complete necessity to allow the bottom to remain open and top closed, so that'd be well and truly scuppered.Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

I understand the logic in that a sliding tray/seat could be viewed as performing the same function, thus the tailgate can be one piece and, I presume, electric.
If there is a poll for this, put me down as preferring the split tailgate.2014MY Discovery

Can't substitute for the things I mentioned though.

You should send that to JLR marketing - I'm sure they could include it in the D4 brochure. Also Gone : MY14 D4 SDV6 HSE : Barolo Black + Almond

For sure the tailgate is useful for roof access -- however for putting bikes on the roof I use one of these foldable platforms :
and keep it in the boot when going out with the bikes. Great for weaklings like me Also Gone : MY14 D4 SDV6 HSE : Barolo Black + Almond
