Personally I'd be glad if it's gone. Lesser of two evils
However, I thought there was somewhere on't interweb a JLR preview /concept car that had a 1-piece tailgate plus a slide-out 'lower bit' - the implication being that this would probably make it to production ?
You have the obvious option to buy something else...
One distinctive feature of the D3/4 taken from the FFLR is the split tailgate....speaking for myself that having had a series of Disco 1's & 2's is a cleverly thought out, well engineered, useful, practical & most of all usable.
I would reckon if there were a poll it would poll as a "need" as opposed to a "want" - however Landrover 'Effin marketing that drive the concept & design wil have thier own ideas as to what is needed anyway.
They will be looking at:
Differentiating the new Disco 3/4 replacement to make it different....by different doesn't invoke it's better or practical just different
Attracting new customers to this specific model & if that means dropping features that we as serious users revere they will do this anyway...it's about market share numbers not practicality.
It may seem as though I am anti marketing.....well yes I probably am as they use data that is gathered from this who don't own & maybe ever will as opposed to the satisfied & faithfull types...I mean has anyone spoken to you in any way as regards specifics on this vehicle you bought, own, use & "love"
Maybe just maybe they do dip in here to gauge opinion......if they do they probably realise this resource is a valuable factor.....a plus factor as opposed to some thing radically different.
Just a point - the Jaguar E-type is in the Musesum of Modern Art in New York...as a design icon....to me it ought to be paired up with a Disco 3.....& it's not just the shape it's the whole concept as a multi use vehicle.BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Just because LR fit s t quality parts doesn't mean to say the tailgate design is rubbish.

Half an hour of swearing n repairing doesn't mean I'd want to be without it.
I've never heard anyone say they'd rather have a conventional top or side opening tailgate 2014 D4 XS

Calais to Malmo via the bridges, up through E Sweden then across to Norway via Arjeplog, to Engeloya, then Lofotens, weather was crap so hacked inland to Kiruna, to Finland, then following the river Tana, up to North Cape, down to Alta & Tromso then down to Kiruna, via a national park with a name I've forgotten, down to Sundsvall & home. A mere 6,300 miles of pure road trip pleasure.
Got similar planned for next year except up through Poland & Baltic states, ferry to Helsinki, E Finland all the way to Inari then poss up to Kirkenes & North Cape again. Still at early thoughts stage.
OK, now I got it and tracked your route. English names confused me first a bit I think I was pretty good in geography at school but couldn't put you on the map in river Tana, it's spelled Teno on Finnish
My kid drove last summer from twin city Haaparanta/Tornio (which is in the border of Sweden and Finland) through Kiruna to Lofotens also. Don't remember how he drove back. Anyway, he recommended that I should do the trip also. And I'm planning to follow his recommendation. I've also driven in other parts of Finnish Lapland, however usually just directly as fast as possible to the ski slopes and back. So time to take a more serious look of that part of the world. Last time I did camping and wild camping there, it was with my parents and 42 years ago
And for the all the rest of you in this thread, sorry for hijacking
and keep it in the boot when going out with the bikes. Great for weaklings like me
It's an option, but I can see it being a bit problematic on some of the rough ground where I've previously loaded bikes, or with a horse trailer/caravan attatched.

I use one of those hop-up platforms for loading four bikes onto the roof. Makes it very easy. Not sure what the significance of having a trailer or 'van hitched up is - I load them from the side so it makes no odds I'm not sure how you'd do it from the tailgate.

After much faffing around (back with the first D3), as a two man team, I should add, we've found it much less...traumatic (bit strong though really) and lower risk to roll the bikes on from the back. Yep, I use the split tailgate to access the roof too. I'm no giant so the lower tailgate is a must for me.
I reckon the D5 will retain a split tailgate.

I wonder if they're considering it as an optional extra. Wouldn't be too difficult to design the aperture so that either would work, then sting the customer an extra £1500 for the privilege. There are two rules for success,
1. Never tell everything you know.

Split tailgate is a must for me too. We find it so useful when camping, tin tenting, dog walking, as a platform, seat, etc., for muddy pursuits or outdoorsy stuff it's a must.
Trying to reach your waitrose bags at the back of the boot is a pain though so that's why they'll delete it if they do. MY15 DIY Black Pack (Better than factory and half the price!)
