The MY10 RRS had a split tailgate of sorts. The glass section would open separately with a push of a button in the centre. It was awful. I think I used it twice in six years, and LR discontinued it sometime later.
The genius in the current D3/D4 design is that the top section is pretty much drip-free no matter how wet the weather. The RRS1/RRS2 one-piece tailgate drips filthy road water onto your back, and I carry a cloth in the boot to wipe the edge of the door before I go underneath it. Poor design, IMHO.
Current BMW X5 has a split tailgate, so I don't think that the shape of the D5 would prevent LR from offering it. MY91 110 CSW, so long ago I can barely remember it - sold
MY07 D3 TDV6 HSE with all the extras - sold
MY10 RRS TDV8 Dynamic - sold
MY16 D4 SCV6 HSE
MY16 RRS SDV8 Dynamic

I see what you mean about the X5 (I hadn't noticed that before but, truth be told, I try not to look at them if I can help it). However, all of the silly curves on the back of the X5 do mean that the tailgate can't fold down nice and low.
If the D5 is not so much about ultimate practicality and more about camping it up with the X5 set, then non of this practicality nonsense really matters too much! 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
