By the time it gets here you may need a wee bit more privacy than the lower tailgate. Especially if they are teenagers!!

If the D5 has the retractable platform it will be a winner as loading the boot will be a lot easier for dwarves

If you had asked me 6 months ago I would have said split tailgate or the world ends but the more I think about it its the platform I need and it doesn't necessarily need to be the tailgate that forms it. In fact like others point out not having the platform as part of the tailgate would make access easier sometimes.
I definitely want some form of platform for all the good reasons we use of the current tailgate but I'm indifferent as to how its implemented just so long as its there
Mind you if its not part of the tailgate it will most probably be an option and an expensive electrically deployable one like the side steps on the FFRR MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

Well I think the split tailgate with the step so one side is shorter on the bottom whilst the top is longer was genius - you could still get some protection from rain with tailgate doors fully open AND helped us shortarses when the lower tailgate was down as well as up
With the gypo truck I have a split tailgate again which is brill AND I've carpeted the bottom like the Discovery 3/4 too - but sadly there's no step, so is not quite as good Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

The new 5 is a completely different concept to the 4. It is basically a big discovery sport, no dedicated chassis and aimed much more at the 'new' breed of JLR customers. Some will love it some will hate it. But I do think the last 4's will hold their residual value very well once it is launched.
I think there's a good chance that the D5 will have a dual set-up similar to the L320; take the split tailgate and apply a secondary split below the hinge to give the best of both worlds - it would be an engineering challenge to make it truly strong and reliable, but not beyond the realms of possibility.
I just hope they see the benefits of a platform of sorts that can be open with the [upper] tailgate shut.

The tailgate on my rrsport was one thing i really didn't like. I have 3 dogs which like to shoot off in different directions as soon as they can. With the disco/ffrr split tailgate i can open the top, subdue the mutts and then open the bottom tailgate while keeping them under control. With the rrsport as soon as the tailgate was high enough to reach in at least one of the mutts had bailed out and was heading for the horizon
I hope the D5 continues with the split (one up-one down tailgate)

Can anyone explain to me how there can ever be a split tailgate when there needs to be a straight line to form a hinge between the lower tailgate and the bumper? There's one on the D4 and each generation of the FFRR; there isn't one on the Vision concept / scarcely disguised D5.
I think that we're looking at a very stylish, but ultimately compromised design.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

I think by now it is quite obvious there is no "split" tailgate however the suggestion is there will be a deployable seat/platform which may (or may not) be useful as it will only be deployable with the tailgate open..

Oh dear, oh dear! I blame all those that say that they struggle to reach the far end of the boot, they've got a lot to answer for! 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Been thinking about this a bit, and I figured that a really nice system to give the hinged lower tailgate that can also be open as one is geometrically do-able, but came to the conclusion that the methods required would be too complex/unreliable/heavy. Shame, as it would've been a nice selling point for the imaginery D5 in my head.
Of course, the biggest benefit of the split tailgate on the D3, which perhaps goes virtually unnoticed, is that with a back end of that shape, a one-piece tailgate would open out a mile back and everyone would be cursing when they back up to a hedge/wall. The split taigate is really a necessity in the design.
I'm sure the D5 could still have the split - we don't know where the pivot might be or what sort of action it would take and it could all be under the disguise. We shall just have to wait and see.
