Lowest for me is around 27 mark and today cruising down M40 was seeing 33.9
15K miles, last 2 fill ups BP Ultimate Diesel, range showed 630 miles (at Warwick services) and stayed there until I hit London (if you add the ODO Trip to Range to get a total range figure on the tank at fill up)
Dropped as soon as I crawled into London and now seeing combined ODO Trip and Range of around 580 miles.

I've done around 5400 miles and have never bettered 27.3MPG I reckon there is some inconsistency in the readings that we are all geting, after all we do have the same engine and even taking into account different driving styles it just doesn't seem to add up. 2004 Discovery 3 - gone

You will find the economy gets better from about 5,000 onwards, particularly if you follow Dr BN's magic formula! 8) DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

As we've said... use the torque and don't labour the engine.
Also... drive a manual not an auto

Well this morning I gunned it up a very steep hill & read 9.1 mpg
I have to say normally 24 to 22 mpg for short A & B roads!
Towed the boat down to the Hamble on Sunday & was getting about 20 mpg
shes about a ton & 6m long & you would not know it was there, towed like a dream
I do think the fuel consumption has gone up since I got her 6 weeks ago!!!
She had under 6,000 miles on her then, I,m shore I was seeing 27 mpg at 88 to 90 mph D5 HSE Waitona Grey 2015

keep your cruising speed to 75MPH or below and you'll see a big jump in MPG... or drop in consumption
I used to thrash around on the motorways until I got the DISCO3 and now I just cannot be bothered as she glides so well on our great and fantastic road surfaces !
With a big bluff face the car really needs to push its way through the air and at above 75MPH I guess it works much harder.

I have just repeated my test that I did a few months ago, where I zero'd the MPG o'meter, then drove for 20 miles at a constant 56mph, no hills, or acceleration or deceleration, just accelerate to 56, set cruise control, Command Shift lock in 6th, drive 20 miles to Stafford services, slow down gently without brakes, park up.
When the car had 2000 miles on the clock, it recorded 39.9 mpg (photo in my gallery) Today with 15500 on the clock, same route, same conditions I had a reading of 47mpg. (at one point it got over the magic 50 mpg- but that was on one of the downhill stretches)
Remarkable (but genuinely unrealistic me thinks, as my overall average is 24.1)
I do put the hammer down more than I should, and I am sure I could get the average up considerably.

Obviously the only accurate way to check your fuel consumption is to fill up to the brim, zero the trip and drive. When you refill take the reading and zero the trip again. The rest is simple mathmatics. Do this about 4 or 5 times and you will know what you are averaging accurately.
The readout on the dash is very deceptive and very inaccurate and usually gives slightly better than reality. If you fill up and just roll down the road, after about 2 miles of No Acceleration, you could get 90mpg, which of course could be photographed but is totally rediculous. Is that what you did Gareth
The real test is simply as above and drive, then work it out. My picture was with a tank about just over half full and a speed of about 85mph, this gave 30mpg which is easily acheivable, but it also covered varied driving and the RoRo ferry and queue.
Keep the revs between 1900 and 2500. Another tip, is do not always select the highest gear (manual) as it may take more effort and use more fuel. In theory 70MPH could give 30mpg in 5th gear. Auto's will always be higher consumption, by default.
In town, 3rd may be the most ecconomical at 30MPH and 4th at 40MPH, because manufacturers design it so.
Could go on, but just think, a 40 tonne truck fully freighted will do about 11mpg, if we get 11.01 we could save on a fleet of them.
Now you work this one out at 0.01 reduction and a truck would cover about 160,000 miles per year and diesel is £0.89 per litre, what is the total saving for 25 trucks per year .
That should take your foot of the loud pedal .

I think the fact that my reported consumption actually goes down (i.e. improves) while I am stationary with the engine idling probably says enough about its accuracy.

Tried another test today . My usual mpg on my Birmingham to London trip is about 27 or 28. Today with the A/C on eco mode ( and a window open a bit .. ) I got 33 mpg. Must be a big drain on the "system" then .. ..............Somewhere in-between my old D3 and what's to come next .........

I did a comparisson with the AC off/on and it didn't seem to make any difference over an identical 25mile trip but sounds like it will over a greater distance
With current temperatures I'd rather take the hit on fuel and have it on though

Interesting though... if you zero the Trip at standstill you get no MPG reading at all even if idling for 10 mins... did this today waiting for someone to move away from my gates.

Simon,
Your a cheeky lad eh ??
Nah... bloody lorry blocking access to my drive !
I only observe the sheep in the fields and on the hills (honest guv) and so far have avoided buying any myself. I think the dog would like them though as she could run underneath them and bite their little legs
