Best Off Road 4X4

4x4 magazine have recently tested 5 door diesel 4x4s to see which was the king off road. It was won by the Santana, Defender 2nd and Disco3 3rd. However, the manufacturers could put whatever tyres they wanted on Santana had MTs LR left the usual road tyres on their 2. Also the tests that they used stopped as soon as a wheel left the ground! We and they know this does not stop DS3!

In the conclusion the writer concluded that although the Santana won in his opinion if LR mut MTs on the Disco and it was allowed to use its full electronic armoury it would win by a mile! 8)

Interestingly when I was in Tenerife last month, I went on a round the island safari, the company we used had open top 110's and Santana's - I was speaking to one of the drivers - his opinion and those of his company was that the Santana was absolute rubbish compared to the 110 basically a lousy engine that keeps breaking down, generally unreliable and they were phasing them out in favour of the real deal.

Santana is Spanish built and they are trying to make a big come back on the back of the demise of the 110. However, I have info that the 110 is staying for at least another 10 years Shocked Great.

Santana

In Norfolk a few weeks ago I saw a Santana in police colours in the car park of Fakenham Police station. Previously they had a 90 stationed there.

I did not get a chance to check out if it was a demo or if Norfolk Police have bought one or more.

Anyone know?

I would imagine the Santana (I pity the great band that this is named after - shame on the Spanish for blighting some of the best guitar rifts ever !)... is a tad cheaper than a brand new LR 110 so this may explain our beleaguered Police Forces purchasing decision.

You're right they are cheaper and I think they have an Italian engine in them - Iveco perhaps - say no more (Ferrari enthusiasts excepted) Whistle

It is a SIII or is that S3 Confused , still uses cart springs (the flat earth society on LROI will love it! Razz ) It has an Iveco 2.8 engine, no difflock or other funnies, but as I said it was shod with MTs. LROI tested it and gave the Defender as the better performer, so there you go! So essentially 4x4 Magazine are a bunch of twits ? Or is it LR for trusting in Goodyear too much and sticking to their guns on tyre choice ?

BN... judging by this thread we are all going to get stuck in Rockingham and your little Jimney shod with real dirt grippers will tow us all out eh ?

One thing I am getting very confused with is tyres recently. Logic tells me that a 'knobbly' tyre will grip and with the appropriate power behind it, get you out of anything.

The upset to this logic is that I have been around several off road tracks now in the D3 on road tyres and not even had a problem. One particular place at Eastnor is known to have caught out many a good Defender, even to the point of being winched out, yet with the D3 on standard road tyres, it only upset the TC for about 2 seconds and away I went.

Is it that the lack of deep tread which clears quicker together with the torque or what?

On my LRE day the tyres were full, there may have been the barest of tread on the edge of the tyre, which does clear quicker than the middle. Occasionally the car ground to a halt but by keeping the revs going and not giving up the car would again start to move. My instructor put it down to thr TR altering the power distribution. On what I saw I don't think the tyres played a part at all. I also think the technique of driving the car is completley different to a Defender.

Pelyma, the D3 has a very sophisticated TC and that is basically ABS in reverse.

However, I have been around courses in the D3 where a Defender would struggle to get round with MTR's with TC and at least 0.7tonnes less weight.

The LRE guys (and I appologise LRE guys because I know a few) do not actually work out in the field generally (I know Vince does and is definately an exception) and they are excellent product salesmen in a known environment.

I have worked out in the field and I am sure that the D3 will perform very well on tyres it would never have been thought possible to do work on before. Need to understand much more about this any tyre technicians on the site?
