I have to say offroad the L322 seems to be able to keep up with D2 G4's, modded cherokees, 90's and D1's. The choice of offroad bits is shocking lacking though.
The towcap is the same IIRC, 3.5tonnes?
Extended fuel tanks are not off the shelf but when you get underneath one there is plenty of space for extra metal box's.
I've found even with a D4/FF that lowering it to access height can still be a challenge to get a disabled person in. I tend to park near a high enough curb to help when i need to as an extra 4-5" can be a big help if you need to lift them in. The boots in both are a god send for wheelchairs though as i have put my mums straight in the boot without folding up a few times which is just a timesaver FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner
Test piloted a new D4 XS SDV6.. Gone and being forgotten i hope!!

I like the RR range a lot but the Disco 3 has 3 advantages in my view:
- 7 seats and good luggage space and can cope with most things thrown at it - even if they risk damaging it a tiny bit
- very sweet manual gearbox
- cloth seats. Love the smell of leather but don't like sliding around in seats or coldness on cold days (OK I have heated seats on the XS but still takes a few seconds to warm up). Never understood the appeal of leather seats but probably just me!
Given an unlimited budget, would probably have both and the Disco 4 would mean losing 2 of the above so not sure where to go next, but happy to run the Disco for (hopefully) a good few years yet.Andy C

Got to agree, sometimes you just can't throw stuff in but I tend to wrap things that could damage up in old sheets or blankets as it helps with any noises of items rubbing together anyway
Leather is a marmite thing but makes life so much easier when seats get dirty FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner

just what will the Disco 3/4/whatever number they get to replacement be like
1) it has to be the same overall size....not pared down...optimised..value engineered
2)it has to have the same overall capability...on road / off road...currently this is what others are measured against...my experiences are its peerless
3)it may be aimed up market (why I don't know as there is plenty from the same stable that fills all these voids...FFRR (top of the heap)...RRS next rep down for those who want a LR 4WD with all the credentials but not as working class blue collar as a Disco......EVOKE for those who want a freelander in different clothes....a mico mini skirt (with suspenders & stockings) or see through leggings....a hairdresser-mobile extord-in-aire
4) So the Disco...the "poor mans" Range Rover..it doesn't need to be about with.......it doesn't have to be as basic as a Defender or the being waited for replacement..to make it beyond the reach of "us" Disco owners who are passionate about our vehicles (OK we have some gripes & issues ...but we hang in there) LR Marketing ought to realise this & analyse what critical element that makes a lump of metal / plastic / rubber this way...do Beemer's / Merc's / Jeeps / Toyotas have this sort of MAGIC...simply NO
5) So I hang on to "my precious" Disco 3 HSE.....now 6 & a half years old BUT bloody awesome...I need & want to know that the replacement is credible & worth waiting for ...fundamentally I don't want some chinless wonder from marketing telling me what I need...I KNOW WHAT I NEED...its parked outside..its called a Disco..mines a 3 others have a 4...it doenst need to be a BLING mobile...it doesn't need to have painted bumpers (so scuffs marr the look..when a scuff on my black plastic trim doesn't show)
6) it does need three rows of seats that fold flat.
7)It does need an analogue clock..one with HANDS....even if it is a digital display on a screen.
8) it does need to be a range of vehicles - basic means basic.....ersatz....HSE means all the toys...with REAR AC please...pretty please
9) a range of engines..3.0 litre diesel....4.8 litre V8 derv burner.....even a smaller than the 5.0 litre Jag petrol burner for this who don't want the performance & economy....hopefully these will be UK made JAG / LR engines.....these keep people in JOBS
10) the list can be added to by fellow enthusiasts.....
ABOVE ALL LR MARKETING......Listen to you customers
usually in marketing the customer is KING
I am led to believe there is no D5 /replacement for the D4 planned... As the D2 was hated in the states they did not expect the D3/4 to sell so had not planned a replacement, hence the new RRS having 7 seats... 15.5MY XS in Corris Grey with Black & Almond leather

The D5 still appears to be on the LR development plans so not really following your thoughts.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

I think D4 is better looking than a RR, more practical space, seats fold completely flat, 7 seats for the odd occasion when you might need them, useful space to shift furniture in when SWMBO makes yet another unnecessary purchase on ebay
Also, In the same way that Arthur Daley had an impact on the image of Jaguar owners, Phil Mitchell of Eastenders has arguably done the same for RR; and my daughters friends think I look like Phil Mitchell!
On price, I could have stretched to buy the RR but really couldnt see the point for reasons give above. In fact, if the RR had been the same price as the RR I would have opted for the D4. The D4 is probably the only 4x4 that provides similar space and flexibility as a Ford Galaxy size people carrier and that is the space i need for my family of 5 [including 3 adults live at home 'kids'] plus dog and regular visits to my holiday home on south coast; not to mention shifting ice hockey kit around on behalf of the ice hockey club i run for children and young adults with learning disabilities Cant wait for delivery of my Orkney Grey/ebony, privacy glass, D4 in early/mid March

FFRR Vs Disco
I have enjoyed reading this thread so thought I would add my two pennorth.
May last year we went out to buy a FFRR so SHWMO and I spent an afternoon in the UK stealers show room going over the new ranges and disco's. A little background- we had had a disco for 18 years in Scotland when I worked there, we got rid after we were let down badly by it and lost confidence . We brought a lovely French car which was great but in snow was very poor as is French driving. So as a couple of old foggies we thought we would indulge in a RR.
We booked a drive in a new Vogue and a Disco. We had over an hour in each. Starting in the Rangie -I thought I would be blown away but no ,comfortable and well trimmed ,yes.
We then drove the Dissy and it really was good. My good lady got in and drove as thought she did every day-like putting on a pair of old slippers!
Well what did we think, getting in the back of theFFRR was difficult and was a no no for the wife. We use the back considerably mostly with OAP's so its important. Front layout was dated and did not seem intuitive ! Being an engineer I thought the 4litre diesel and the gearbox did not match well and for me over revved to change gear.
The disco on the other hand was a revaluation ,very quiet, gear change really good and so sophisticated !
We collected the Dissy in September (LHD) and it is fantastic we are really happy(except for the sat nav!) We have what you young guys call toys e.g. 5 cameras but us oldens with arthritic necks call essential etc. The only thing I would like is the adaptive cruise control which on the FFRR was amazing! If the technical lads on the forum crack the system for adding to theD4 I will be in the queue for the mod.
I was asked if I would have gone for the new model FFRR but with over 20years experience of Aluminium body's I will leave others to be-bug before I would consider!

I have had a 4.4 54 plate FFRR, a 4.2SC FFRR 06 plate and now have a 05 plate D3 TDV6 SE, so far I am very impressed with the D3,
I have full leather with 7 seater on mine as it was spec'd up on order, satnav etc, so trim wise nothing in it.
Cost wise I am loving a motor that costs half of a FFRR!!!!!, manual box so no more auto failure risk!!
The rest is build like a tank underneath, which gives a better protection rating than the FFRR could ever claim.
So if I go for a change in a couple of years a D4 or D??? Will definitely be getting a test drive!!.
So long as it a Land Rover, as the rest don't get close!!
I am led to believe there is no D5 /replacement for the D4 planned... As the D2 was hated in the states they did not expect the D3/4 to sell so had not planned a replacement, hence the new RRS having 7 seats...
Bug- -ger ME
I was told the chassis of the Disco 3/4 was to be the chassis of the Defender replacement...but if its all going "Ally" I can see the point.....
what does concern me is if the Disco 3/4/5 whatever replacement is to be a stretched RRS that it hasnt the load lugging pan technicon type capacity of what we are used to know....
mea agin it may have to be a FFRR - I may have to trade the XK....BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Would have liked an RR but too much money for what you got over the D3. Would also have liked an RRS but need the interior space for lots of junk for assorted weekends. When I give up that hobby then maybe an RRS with its smaller interior. The SL has to do for the wow factor at the moment (and wow bills). Teutonic engineering my .
