Why D3/D4 over RR?
Purchase Cost
General running costs, service fuel and insurance.
Practicality -7 seats was a big factor and easy access large load carrying capability.
I know I wouldn't have dared take a RR where my D3/4's have been, thought of repairs alone!
D3/4 until now, represented the newest technology for the big machines. D4 3.0 SDV6 GS 13
D4 3.0 SDV6 GS 09-13
D3 2.7 TDV6 GS 07-09
.....the cost difference between the RRS & the D3 was a considerable amount...(That cant be explained...same production line)
for what was a smaller / shorter vehicle that at the outset used lots of the same bits...one difference was the name plate being RR & not LR.....you paid a premium to be there. Silly money
The RRS was & still is significantly smaller in terms of passenger room (both in front & in the 2nd row + no 3rd row) & when you wanted to load it up you had a significantly smaller void to use. The RRS is a big car (cost, upkeep & running cost that isnt that big...actually the Freelander 2 is more usable / economical /practical.
OK......the RRS had all the engine options that we D3ers have been denied...(maybe the D4 replacement will alter this) + it is to be called a Discovery not a D3 / D4 / D5 ....that dates all thats gone before & up residuals. The RRS had a bit more woody bits rather than the Fablon alternatives that fooled some into tarting the inside of a very practical already good vehicle..at the end of the day I am not fooled into buying or fitting that that isn't real wood.
If I have to down size it would & probably be the FL2..sensible money.BREXIT - done properly.

D4 or Range Rover ???
Well, the £32,000 price difference had a lot to do with it !! - and the boot space is smaller in the Ranger RoverDuncan

We don't like to talk about money in too much detail. I just like to think that my D4 came with a free MX-5 for the wife, a free holiday in Canada and a free ride-on lawnmower and a number of free meals in nice restaurants….Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

We hired an Evoque for a week in the summer and it was a dreadful car. I want, as a play toy, a Porsche Boxster but SWMBO said and I quote "There's no way you're driving a girlie car that will make you look like a gay hairdresser"!
Drove a FFRR and yes it is more comfortable and quieter than a D3, but do I really want my children and dogs clambering over the interior after a long and muddy walk? Nope, I don't, and when my eldest daughter is here with my two grandsons, or we go to them, we don't need to use two cars to go anywhere because the D3 has seven seats.
As much as I'd like a Range Rover, either FF or a sport, the D3 is more practical in many ways. Not to mention it just looks so damn sexy! You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

I sold my 70k (then) TDV8 Autobiography and brought a Defender got fed up of justifying why I had a winch on my FullFat
D3 was proper D4 is trying to be a FF and its not
Fook all wrong with an Epoke apart from its not a Range Rover in the same way as Sport is not either

Couldn't fit the dogs in a FFRR or a Sport.
Reason for G4 over a normal D3 is I wanted rear aircon for dogs and very little 2008 models with rear aircon in UK.
Maybe when we've down sized our dogs we'll rethink the car but not for a few years.Ian

just what will the Disco 3/4/whatever number they get to replacement be like
1) it has to be the same overall size....not pared down...optimised..value engineered
2)it has to have the same overall capability...on road / off road...currently this is what others are measured against...my experiences are its peerless
3)it may be aimed up market (why I don't know as there is plenty from the same stable that fills all these voids...FFRR (top of the heap)...RRS next rep down for those who want a LR 4WD with all the credentials but not as working class blue collar as a Disco......EVOKE for those who want a freelander in different clothes....a mico mini skirt (with suspenders & stockings) or see through leggings....a hairdresser-mobile extord-in-aire
4) So the Disco...the "poor mans" Range Rover..it doesn't need to be about with.......it doesn't have to be as basic as a Defender or the being waited for replacement..to make it beyond the reach of "us" Disco owners who are passionate about our vehicles (OK we have some gripes & issues ...but we hang in there) LR Marketing ought to realise this & analyse what critical element that makes a lump of metal / plastic / rubber this way...do Beemer's / Merc's / Jeeps / Toyotas have this sort of MAGIC...simply NO
5) So I hang on to "my precious" Disco 3 HSE.....now 6 & a half years old BUT bloody awesome...I need & want to know that the replacement is credible & worth waiting for ...fundamentally I don't want some chinless wonder from marketing telling me what I need...I KNOW WHAT I NEED...its parked outside..its called a Disco..mines a 3 others have a 4...it doenst need to be a BLING mobile...it doesn't need to have painted bumpers (so scuffs marr the look..when a scuff on my black plastic trim doesn't show)
6) it does need three rows of seats that fold flat.
7)It does need an analogue clock..one with HANDS....even if it is a digital display on a screen.
8) it does need to be a range of vehicles - basic means basic.....ersatz....HSE means all the toys...with REAR AC please...pretty please
9) a range of engines..3.0 litre diesel....4.8 litre V8 derv burner.....even a smaller than the 5.0 litre Jag petrol burner for this who don't want the performance & economy....hopefully these will be UK made JAG / LR engines.....these keep people in JOBS
10) the list can be added to by fellow enthusiasts.....
ABOVE ALL LR MARKETING......Listen to you customers
usually in marketing the customer is KINGBREXIT - done properly.

I had discos from 1996 until 2009 and was always smitten. Was wearing my disco3.co.uk fleace today so that says it all. D3 was great, but the FFRR TDV8 has been the best vehicle I've ever owned bar none. Horses for courses and all that - if I needed 7 seats the FFRR would be a no-go. Running costs are very similar, but I couldn't go back to a Disco. I've now had the FFRR for four years (57k miles) and I still love it like it was a new motor. Never had an issue with it. My intention is to keep it until it dies because I'll never want to afford an new one - especially since it now looks like a freeander on steroids.
In fact, the only problem with it is the FFRR site is pants compared to what disco3.co.uk was.

.Hi Alex. I still lurk occasionally (!) but that's been four years with the FFRR now. As for my other 4x4, have you not seen the other thread? CLICKYThe older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

opted for the D3 over a RR and RRS mostly because of the boot size. I needed a boot that was a lot deeper than virtually all other options.
The other consideration was also the ability to lower the car down to access height. My wife is disabled and some larger 4x4s she couldn't get into , nornmal estate cars were to low down for her and the boots too small for her mobility scooter.

There were many reasons for me choosing the Disco 3, firstly was pricing at 22 the cost of purchase and insurance was obvious which one I would chose, however I also went from a G4 discovery 2 and needed the ability for off-road driving, towing capacity for my other toys, long distance driving involved the fitting of an aux fuel tank and of course the ability to modify it to my liking. Having owned it for just shy of a year now I can say it is the best all rounder there is, and I would never look at any other type of vehicle as a main vehicle.

went for a D3 over a L322 as the L322s in our budget looked awful -either tired or too 'chavvy'. The oh finally came round to a D3 as a compromise between an L322 and an F2 - with the added bonus of a petrol engine cheers
