Small amount of smoke on tick over with a slight smell of unburned fuel, plus went away the other weekend and when i was going down a steepish section on over run got lots of smoke and couldnt see discocuzzy behind sorry Steve thats when i realised something was not quite right, other than that car runs fine not missing no lights on the dash no miss fire but Wiggs did plug his box of trick into my car and it said something like cylinder 3 - Fuel Trim at Max Limit or min cant remember and injector balance was 3 x 999 1 x 1138 1 x 750 1 x 850
It was only when i took the cat off a couple of weeks before it came to light i started getting a smell in the car so started saving up then Wanted D4s non runners pm for competitive price.

I'm Back
Hey Guys,
sorry for the delay in getting back on the injector post's. After all this time I got it sorted.
After all the problems, I did a lot of digging regarding common rail pressure senders, gear box speed senders, Injection pump pressure valve. etc.
I had read some storys about the ZF Auto box giving the affect of engine misfire and vibration when you put the power on or towing up hill.
so I thought it was the cheap option to replace the gear box sump which contains the filter and change the gear box oil.
And Guess what ???. Cured the faults, Unbelivable, drives completly diffrent now.
Can't believe that the auto box oil would make all that much change.
The oil was very dark and was well used. I am at present running on Dextron 2 for a week than going to change the oil out for Dextron 3 as this is the higher grade to use if you want it for long life ( they say upto 130k)
I,m a Agricultural engineer and have never sean such odd thing happen to a vehicle that the gear box oil would cause. We recon the oil was not holding pressure in the converter stator so letting go and then catching up this upset the EMS and causes the injection system to compensate giving the resulting red herring results.
Hope this might help some one else out there and save some money.
Oh and by the way, don't try to change the gear box sump yourself on the driveway your need a ramp and undo the engine mounts as the engine needs moving up to clear the gear box sump past the cross member as the pick up tube is part of the sump and its all plastic and will break off . Be carefull.

A gear box issue was actually the first thing I thought of when I read your issue....
Do you have some oil left to have it tested for Glycol. Some of us (and me) had a cracked radiator so Glycol leaked into the autobox cooling system causing the same issues.CLUB ILLEGAL CAR WASHERS

No, oil disposed of, however the oil did not seam to have any moisture content ie: milky streaks. The magnet in the gear box sump were suprisingly clean as well no swarth which i would have expected for a car that has done 125k. The gear change is noticably better , like each gear you can feel on the change up and non of the shuddering that I used to get when putting the power on.
When I drop the current oil out in a weeks time if there is any water content it will show as the oil being new will turn pink from the blood red it was when we filled it .
This oil will have flushed the system and then in with the long life Dextron 3.

Hi Liston glad you got sorted in the end, dont want to hi jack your topic but thought it was a good one to add on to I have a manual so my fault will be different just hoping its an injector or two I rang a lot of company's today trying to find one that I'm happy with and that can test the Siemens injector it seem there a bit of an odd ball injector and nobody wants to touch them, was just about to give up when I rang the last one on my list a company called lewson diesel injection Ltd spoke to a very helpful chap and when mentioned siemans and TDV6 I was waiting for oh,well, umm but to my surprise he answered straight away with confidants "not a problem send them in we will test them strip and clean if needed"which surprised me as a had a job to get anyone to test them let alone strip and clean which is probably all they need fingers crossed,so looking good ,was feeling a bit more confidant after speaking with them and more than happy to send them my injectors will keep you all informed of the outcome if your interested
Posted them off today ,so they should be with them by 1300 tomorrow had a job finding a courier that would insure them for 2k Would of took a chance normally but with my luck lately there bound to get lost

Apperently they are the only diesel injector specialist in Scotland who have a common rail test bed??
They refurbed the diesel pump on my 300tdi D1 about 3 years ago, and thats still running perfectly as well"Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Injector problems
Hi, At 65K i would not expect injectors to give problem.
I'm not sure if there is a low pressure pump in the fuel tank on a D3 but might be worth checking out as this would give problems when on demand fuel is needed for a common rail system, as this may cause a problem if it can not supply fuel whewn the injectiopn pump needs it when putting on the power.
Also if you have not had the D3 from new a cause of injection problems on common rail can be some one trying to run the engine on bio fuel/cooking oil or red diesel, these both can cause long term damage to injection pump and injectors.
Other points that can cause problems:
The short common rail has a pressure sensor in it, its at the back of the engine. the rail comes complete with sensor. about £90 from LR. also on the bottom side of the injection pump is a pressure valve this compensates for pressure spikes and smooths out pressure for the rail system, these have been known to fail.
Just some points incase the injectors are not the problem.
Hope these may help.
regards, Liston
