Oil in the expansion tank |
|
Hi All,
I have a 2008 D3 with about 225000km on the clock. Engine runs really well but recently spotted gunky oil in the expansion tank. There is no sign of any milky stuff on the dip stick or the oil filler cap.
Any clues or suggestions will be most welcome.
It did overheat once or twice in the summer here in SA, but no oil was present at that time in the expansion tank.
Engine has developed an oil leak from somewhere at the rear of the engine....

I had this a few years ago but it was on freelander td4 it was the oil cooler that was at fault, the cooling system runs through it, either a seal has gone or hole in the separation wall, you may need a new rad because there a pig to clean out

In the top V of the engine is a water to oil cooler.
Could be this.
I think it’s under the oil filter housing.

Fill the water expansion bottle till it overflows do not replace the cap, start the engine and run at tickover speed, watch the bottle for any bubbles rising out. This is a simple check to show if a cylinder head gasket has failed particularly if the engine is running hotter than usual.
Keep an eye on engine oil level as this may also be low or contaminated. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Yep, I did the water check, no bubbles and the oil level is consistent. No serious drop there. Discovery 3 TDV6 S 2008 auto, Borolo Black

Either the oil cooler has popped or more likely the gasket between cooler and block is seeping

It’s not too difficult. Sits on top of the engine in the V
