Hi all
Following my decision to fit these myself - didnt get a reply to my email for them to be fitted by someone between xmas and new year which is understandable - so i went for it.
My tips/steps are:
• Make sure the engine is off, ignition off and key out of ignition before you disconnect anything
• Don’t bother trying to remove the rear part of the console you cant access anything from there anyway
• Remove the gear stick - auto - by pulling equally and firmly upwards whilst in park
• Remove the rubber inserts in the centre console - you may find a screw there underneath
• Remove the visible screw from the EPB (hand brake)
• Remove the little plastic cover behind EPB - just pops off
• Remove the lid of the console box/store or cool box- see pics as the covers over the hinges are a pig to get off
• I took off the suspension and gearbox selector as I wasn’t sure if these would restrict the removal of the console – they don’t so you can leave them in place
• Its not obvious how the lid comes off after you have removed the screws and the covers - I found out by chance that the hinge is in 3 pieces and you just open the lid to a certain point and gently pull up and the hinge comes away - the centre tube comes out of the end fixed points/lugs
• Then starting at front of the console just after EPB - slowly pull up on the centre console - it is only held in by clips at this point - in fact mine only had one screw next to the EPB and there wasn’t one under the rubber insert
• Do this slowly and a bit at a time, once one part lifts move to other side same place, then back a few inches
• The hardest part is near the suspension/gearbox selectors as its hard to tell where the console splits – but as you can see on the pics its all one and piece and you just need to keep going clip by clip
• Once the clips are free then you can gently lift the console upwards. But I suggest you move the EPB switch backwards as far as you can as this has the shortest cable.
• Then as soon as you have lifted a few cm you can access the connector on the EPC switch – there is a point which you push in to release it – fiddly but you can do it without seeing
• Once that has been disconnected then the console will lift quite a way and gives you good access to the other connectors to be removed, gearsick, suspension/terrain – all visible in the pics
• Then you can remove the console. Check you have all the clips and none have fired across the car. Some come off and need pushing back in place
• If you have the cooloing box there are just 2 screws holding it in place. See pics – remove these and disconnect power
• The box still feels like its fastened in mechanically but its not just strong clips. I got a thick cloth to protect my delicate office worker hands and then pulled on the unit upwards with some force holding it at the back near the hinge and at the front. With a jolt it came free
• Then you can see everything and the hardest bit is now done
• You can push from the back and pull from the front the aux panel – where the 12v cig lighter is. This again is just clipped in and I actually removed this by just pulling on it from the back of the console but as I said it gave no access to anything so little point fighting at the back when you can have access from both sides
• Once you have taken the panel put you can drill the holes ready to accept the new AV inputs and AUX input that comes in the kit. The hole locations can be seen from the back side of the plate. Use a slightly larger drill bit to give you some slack or it will be a pig to mount unless you drill with a laser.
• The AV input unit from the kit just unscrews and fits using the same screw holes – well mine had 2 more – as in the KIT
• The wiring is easy. There is an extension lead with a spliced supply that fits into the controller – small male and female plugs. This little plug supplies the power to the system. There is a suppressor that has a plug just like the cigarette lighter power supply but this connects to the matching plug on the harness/controller with the kit
• On my car there is a green plug which is the AUX input to the radio unit. This simply plugs back into the AV input unit that comes with the kit.
• You need to route the blue cable from the controller in the kit to the back of the AV input unit. There is not much room between the unit and the ventilation ducts but it just fits in. this cable needs routing out of the way of the cooling box – I ran it next to the other cables and cable tied it in place
• There is just enough cable to locate the controller at the other side of the cooling box.
• You can route the screen cables (Left and right) out from the console to under the seat. There are not many holes in the console but with a few long scratched fingers and hands you can find some existing openings near the level of the EPC that go under the seat from the console – see pics
• The suppressor should be earthed – not done in my pics but it will be. I took it off its mounting plate so that it would fit snug next to the auto selector unit. Otherwise there wasn’t much choice of location
• Removing the headrests is a pain but with patience can be done without damaging anything. I used another members tip and uses a plastic spoon. It needs to be a string plastic not disposable fork!! And flat with a rounded edge. If you push hard on one side of the cover downwards with a little twist you can put the plastic fork handle in the opening. Then push with the fork and the protruding lugs can be seen and the cover can be pulled out at one side. I found removing one side from the top whilst leaving the fork in and the pulling the cover from the bottom whilst pushing in on the leather was the easiest way. But note the bottom part of the cover is very sharp and will cut leather so protect the leather with something or slide another flat plastic device under it
• Once they are off the rest is easy. Torque bolts come out then the headrest handles pull apart – away from the seat in a horizontal direction with a bit of force and are not secured to the headrest at the top
• There is one release clip under the leather on the left side that needs pushing in before you can release the poles and push the headrest upwards
• The back of the seat looks hard to remove the cover – but its enough to pull the plastic clip apart that runs full width of the seat at the bottom of the backrest –see pic
• A right angled screwdriver inserted and pulled whilst holding the plastic releases it but it needs a bit of pulling once it has started to come away
• Once that’s undone there is enough room to get your hand up to grab the cable you feed down through the whole.
• You will need to make a hole in the new headrests to accept the handles or modify the handles so they don’t have the plastic item that goes into the old headrest. A dry run with the headrests is easy enough to mark where to cut.
• You need to straighten the cable out so that it goes straight or use a coat hanger and feed another cable or string down through the hole and out the bottom. I just straightened the cable and it went quite easy where I wanted it to.
• A word of caution – when you come to remove the headrests the plug can get caught so be gentle and rotate the cable whilst pushing and pulling until it comes free
• I had to read the instructions to find out how to turn the screens off as they are always on. I couldn’t work it out I am afraid but all you do is keep the menu button pressed in for 3 seconds!
Good luck

hids4u,
Thanks for the detailed brief and the very informative pictures, if nothing else it has highlighted the fact that there are more than two wires which i presumed would be a doddle to fit
There fore armed with the relevant information i now need to set aside more time than originaly estimated.
As said thanks for the post and for the pics,
i will keep you posted of my progress throughout and hopefully have them fitted with no dramas.
Cheers.

Craig:
My 7 - year old is a bit of a shorty like his dad, and he has no complaints about the view - these screens are very bright, and have an excellent viewing angle
Biggs:
There is an apple "ipod composite AV cable" (NOT the component cable) that you need - this also has a USB-cable along with the RCA plugs for audio+video - plug this into a decent car charger (needs about 1A I think) and Bob's your Aunty. not the neatest, but it works great
TLO. Email & PM sent in not too late Cheers Ian
