Replaced the radiator today. What a b…h to get the old one out and new one in.

Cut the old one in half. In the name of science, of course. The old one seemed fairly clogged or congested. Whistle

Also, the ATF compartment inside is 1.5 dl in volume (in case someone ever wondered).

Brutal Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

What was the fault Question were you losing coolant externally or coolant contamination within the gearbox oil. Did you have any issues bleeding the system after replacement.

Just interested.

Thanks

Well, I “happened” to have an extra brand new Nissens radiator Whistle Whistle Whistle also happen to have an extra OEM water pump but am keeping it as a spare so far

No issues with coolant and ATF mixing, I had done this a few times already in the spring since the thermostat housing got changed. Both fluids are clear. Also the ATF looked fine after four years and 65k km.

Bleeding the system with a new radiator was MUCH easier than with the one that had manufacturing stamps 9/11/2004. In general bleeding the V8 is a PITA. Not much else is. Afterwards, the old one was at least partially obstructed.

Hey guys. So I popped to IKEA Glasgow on Tuesday evening and as I was driving through Govan my aux belt either snapped or came off. I had started to notice a squeak over the previous couple of days but it then catastrophically failed as I turned into the fuel station at the Govan Asda! It was 9pm when I called the RAC and it was 3am when I finally got seen and put on a truck!

Anyway, when they finally get the car delivered back to me (which is apparently very complicated) I am going to replace the drive pulleys and the belt. I do not have very much experience on doing this sort of work myself but a friend who is a mechanic at JLR in Edinburgh feels it's something I can do myself in a couple of hours! What do you guys think?

If anyone has done this and has any tips they would be much appreciated. My friend is going to let me know today what parts I need to order before I start and will give me the procedure.

Easy but it depends if you know one end of spanner from another.

Just a pain removing the fan which needs special tools.

Yeah I see the fan is a pain. In this video he tackles it at 04:30:

He says there are many methods to get it off. Are there any preferred methods among you guys? I want to get any extra tools ahead of time so can pop out to get any today.

i'm going to do all the belts on mine at some point this year - I have atleast one of the tensioners going too so I'll do the lot while i'm in there

I reckon for that its about £250 in genuine parts whihc are

short belt - PQS500221
Idler kit - PQR500350
Long belt - PQR5000330
short belt tensioner PQG500030
long belt tensioner PQG500220

I should add I have had absolutely zero success with pattern belts on a land rover ever. I have never had a problem with genuine

Same experience with air filters incidentally

well honestly I've never tried them on the D3 but I fitted two in short succession on the d2 and both disintegrated. put genuine back on with no other changes and its still going 25K later

Air filters I've noticed significant drop in performance on the td5 over a relatively short period of time thats restored by fitting a genuine air filter so I tend to stick with genuine for critical consumables - I can't see the gen builts being much more expensive than pattern either

Thanks

Might just get some genuine ones then for peace of mind as it's her daily at the mo. It's going to rain this weekend so probably have to wait a week anyway.

not in my experience - albeit not on the v8

Dayco cambelts I've fitted have also been fine though

As for filters, I’d just stay away from JLR unless you truly worship the brand. Spend your hard earned cash on something else instead.

Cabin air. Mahle or Mann are active charcoal (or + antibacterial). Any manufacturer if you just want basic “white” one.
Engine air. Mahle or Mann. Mahle is the OE I believe.
Oil filter. Mann or Mahle.

Plenty of choice besides these but the green oval shouldn’t be among them Mr. Green Whistle

Maybe the price difference is significant enough for you but luckily the cost is so close on some of those parts why would you down grade ?

Remember OEM does not mean manufactured to the same standard - it does not even mean that they manufactured the original part you're talking about just that they manufactured a part for JLR at some point - that makes the OEM badge permissible. I can name a number of components where the OEM sells a part under their own brand and makes a part for JLR. outwardly the parts look the same but the function is different.
Don't forget Britpart are now a JLR OEM as they supply some parts to LR

never trust those three letters unless you can check the providence of the manufacturing standards
