Hidden Winch Mount fitted
Having seen Chris Tyler and Wiggs hidden winch installs I decided to fit one to mine, couldn't justify the £1500 or so for the Land Rover approved G4 kit so got the winch mount from Uncle Ray and winch from eBay. Whole project came in under £650 and includes radio remote operation for the winch.
Really happy with the result, just need to fit a number plate plinth on a quick release bracket of some sort to hide it all when not in use and it will be complete.

More pics in the gallery. It is a fairly easy job to do but the free-spool lever on the winch needed to be modified as there is no room for the standard one (again big thanks to Uncle Ray) and I ordered some longer battery cables from tbruk.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Now that gives me hope I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Very nice ,
Did the threaded bar line up ok ? ..ray moved it down a touch as mine was slightly to high.
Oh a little tip , if you keeping it attached to the underside towing eye ...put a bit of rubber matting in place before you tighten it ...saves the paint work .
plinth has gone... TLO has left the building.......

All lined up nicely, just my eyesight that needs checking as I cut the bumper slightly askew
I am planning to hook it onto the recovery point, will put a neat strip of black gaffer tape to stop paint damage.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Not tested in anger yet but seems very good so far, the remote control is a great feature and for the price I reckon it's unbeatable. It might not like being dunked in water though so will see what happens to it after the next wading session. That said, the fact that it is behind the bumper should mean it gets less wet than it would sitting out at the front. I think I will put a plastic sheet over the grill slot when off-roading to protect it further, couldn't find a waterproof box to fit the solenoids in (Maplins one was too small by around 5mm) so used original non-watertight version, again it is designed to be fitted in the open so should be fine back there.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Just wondered if the cable needed any extra repellant if it's out in the weather/salt etc at the front of the car. Particularly at the the bend in the cable?Bodsys Brake Bible

Should be OK as is, some recommend light oil on thw winch cable but it will pick up all sorts of dust/dirt that way. Regular use will keep it in good nick, if not used in anger at least wind the cable on and off the drum once a month.
I might change to synthetic rope TBH but it adds another £150-£180 to the cost by the time you buy the alloy fairlead and heat proof end shield.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto
