Did anyone ever find a definitive source and solution for this vibration or sound? It is driving me crazy.

This is my understanding of it.
The earlier F77 torque converter was noisy, whether there's a design flaw or just wear, I'm not sure. It was superceded by the Y85 version.
My 07 d3 is noisy. A friends early d4 is silent as the grave. Both have the zf 6hp26 gearbox I believe.

Drive Shaft Pillar bearing |
|
I recently replaced my drive shaft assembly, and found that the pillar block bearing on the shaft was worn out beyond recognition. My noise was the same but more pronounced when the shaft back lashed upon coming off the throttle and when the accelerator would kick into power up a hill. Once I changed the drive shaft out, the sound along with a knocking vibration from the rear of the vehicle went away after that.
I'd check the pillar bearing if you have not already, but it is better done with the rear wheels jacked off the ground as it releives the pressure that a locked down wheel has due to being grounded. 2005 Land Rover D3, 4.4L V8, Maya Gold Metallic

I changed my rear prop shaft and it did not fix the vibration.

So just a follow up. I had the same shaking under acceleration at 35-40 and then again at 50-55mph. I have a V8 with automatic transmission. It was driving me crazy. The shaking instantly stopped when I let off the gas. Only shook when under power. Changed my rear prop shaft and it did not help.
Then I noticed a trend. The very first 1/2 mile in the morning there was zero shaking. Then it would start again after the car warmed up. Park for a couple hours and again no shaking the first 1/2 mile. So heat definitely had something to do with it. Then I realized the transmission fluid is warming up and the viscosity must be affecting the torque converter or something in the autobox itself.
Some googling turns up "transmission shudder". I bought some Lubeguard Instant Shudder Fixx, may have a different name in Europe, put it in and the shaking/shudder is instantly gone. I know it's a temporary fix but at least I now have a lead on the problem. Hope that helps.
