I have the rattle when I back of on the accelerator, the clonk when changing gear when it's cold and the groan when going up through the Auto box
It's done all the above noises for the last 10k miles that I have put on the clock and doesn't appear to be getting any worse - fingers crossed
I now just put it down to how the car is Current:

Nice to know IOM man, and none seem to affect performance...
Probably best to live with it (them).

Yep I agree Farsco, the only decent road is the TT Course
I am usually quite OCD over rattles when I am driving but with a Discovery you have to learn to live with certain noises Current:

I think we have to ask the guys that have manual gearboxes if they have that noise.
If they do, then its not gearbox related. If they don't however, the autobox is responsible.....
So anyone with a manual noticed the sound??????

I believe it has - following my gearbox being rebuilt.
I noticed a noise a long time ago - and whilst in the Pyrenees last year (October) I noticed that it was in time with the gearbox locking up - more pronounced when offroad - possible because it was slow speeds.
I do need to drive it more to be absolutely sure, so don't take it as gospel yet Mark.

Wow let's jump on this issue everyone..
I recently sold my 06 RRS and purchased my "dream car" - a white LR3 HSE, 06 also.
Guess what, they both did this! I didn't notice it on the test drive, but it's one of the reasons I ditched the RRS!
It sounds like a harmonic resonance is at play also, perhaps a failed bearing somewhere which (along the length of an axle or steering rod) makes the noise and vibration more obvious through the steering wheel, gas pedal, and cabin.
It's incredibly annoying to the point where I find myself (without realizing it) trying to modulate the throttle to get rid of it.
PART throttle, ONLY after torque converter is locked up, steady speed.. usually ~45+mph. More throttle or removing throttle and it's instantly gone.
Noise is SPEED DEPENDENT not RPM dependent, which would mean something between output side of transmission and the wheel hubs - wheel bearings, axles, front diff, front driveshaft, and transfer case could be involved.
The BIG THING that stumps me is HOW such a vibration can travel through the steering box / column and remain so "sharp" - one would think it would be rather muffled by the time it was at the steering wheel, unless it's resonance also.
So maybe that's a clue... what driveline components mount rigidly VERY close to steering components? The hub seems a "central link" between steering and driveline.
My RRS had a junked "tested" differential installed under extended warranty and that didn't change the noise, but it's possible that it was also from another similar-mileage RRS since it wasn't new, so that doesn't rule out diff but makes it less likely.
FWIW not to complicate things by my LR3 has an additional trait to the noise, more of a flatter "whirring" gear noise on part-throttle also (although this sounds more centrally-located below center console around trans/tcase) while the RRS was just the higher frequency sharp vibration feeling through wheel/pedal/cabin.
It really sounds like the majority of vehicles are doing this, over ~60-70k mi.. so hopefully we can figure it out!
EDIT: just to clarify that we are talking about the same problem, the noise I'm speaking of is NOT a rattle, it's in the driveline of the vehicle and once slack is removed (part throttle) it appears, THROUGH the vehicle not "on" vehicle like a rattle. It is not a low-freq wobble, shaking, etc.. definitely NOT tire related as I've experienced it on two different 06 vehicles and different tires now. The frequency is too sharp to be wheels or tires.. it's an internal component. I really feel like it's bearing related but who knows.

You managed to describe perfectly the noise/vibration i have in my car.
It is amazing to find how many others have the exact same vibration and no one has been able to find the exact source of this.
I have been dealing with it as a "normal" Disco3 thing, even tough I know it is not.

Well I've had plenty of time to think about how to describe it, so I'm glad it makes sense to others!
BUMP! As the last poster said, considering how the forums members here can solve just about everything on earth regarding these cars (some of it really trivial lol) you'd think this problem would be driving people CRAZY.
I turned everything off this morning, slow traffic.. I swear I can hear a slight metal-on-metal noise for a split second on each rotation of the wheel (~5mph traffic) which would definitely sound like a wheel bearing.
Hmm.

My car is going to the shop next week for some preventive maintenance and I will ask the guys to invetigate this noise/vibration. I will tell them to check wheel bearings just in case.
I will post here if anything is found.

I also have a noise and vibration/ buzz felt though the wheel. This is road speed/ throttle position related. I suspect it's something in drive line. The vibration is more pronounced when the throttle is wider. Mine is a TDV6 manual.
