Disco 3 Jack failure
Hello all
I had cause to use the LR supplied jack recently on the road side and suffered the reported collapse due to the threads stripping. The jack looked hardly used and the screw was really well lubricated as supplied from new.
The jack was not being raised at the time, just supporting the vehicle all chocks were installed and the suspension selected to the off road setting before the job was commenced.
I know it has been reported before but if it does happen to you (UK registered vehicles) please report it to VOSA on the GOV website so that LR will hopefully be pushed in to recalling these items before they really hurt someone.
A buckling jack due to the vehicle moving I can understand but for well lubricated threads to just strip has to be a manufacture problem or poor materials.
Be careful people.....

My jack collapsed just as I got my wheel back on after a puncture repair. Just as a nipped up the nuts in the air luckily. My jack was well lubricated and has been up and down about 7 times from new. (The thread in the nut has stripped off). I then torqued wheels up on the ground. I've bought a nice bottle jack today.
I hope it goes under with a. Flat tyre

It's all down to an inadequate specification...the jack may be OK for (far) lighter vehicles but not a SUV of this mass..
The fact that like all 4x4's it can move forwards & backwards during a wheel swap amplifies this inadequacy....BREXIT - done properly.

Just changed the rear right Wheel on My D3. Reason the tyre was good but load rating was 108 not OK on a D3 - thanks dealer in Yaxkley (just outside Peterborough), for that and the other two damaged tyres I had to change as well.
Used a 3 Tonne trolley jack from Machine Mart and that seemed to struggle. The "OEM " scissor jack fears me with dread. Thank God for an AA gold card if I have a problem on tour!!

I cancelled my aa 1 year and went elsewhere because they put up my price for renewal and refused to lower the price back to what it was.(I was gold). I'm now back with them and have been for a few years. I've made it to a silver card now. I wouldn't want to call them with a flat tyre really. I'm going to try out my bottle jack soon to test its height ect. Its the getting it under with a flat tyre which concerns me more.

That looks like the Merc Sprinter bottle jack that loads of forum members bought a few years ago, inclu myself.
Those jacks have also been prone to failure, spilling their oil everywhere.

Mine however, has never leaking a drop but wont work in cold conditions, the thing is useless below about 5 degrees. When the weather warms up, it works again. Mods:

wonder if something like this would be any good to keep in the boot
That's a rebadge of an existing one and it is incapable of lifting a D3 high enough to change a tyre except in 100% flat perfect conditions with lots of chocking of non-lifted wheels and an axle stand or two.
Lots of threads on here on the subject of air jacks

thks
appreciate the heads up regarding these
think it may be a better idea to invest in a small bottle jack to keep in my boot instead
seeing i've only got to get a puncture in the bag i'm and won't have any back up

I bought it because my other jack collapsed and was dangerous. I saw sombody fit this type of jack in the original jack compartment and thought it must be ok. I need 6 and 7 seats up regular so I didn't want to take away any additional space I have for the buggy and other bits and pieces.
It does lift my car with ease. Not even using its second extension. I've just tried it at 3:30am in the freezing cold. (I do work nights) lol.
I just hope there's enough clearance get the bloody thing under with a flat tyre if it ever happens again.
I'm sure they will be in off-road height.

Update on my collapse, VOSA are investigating but need more reports of failures so please use the VOSA site if you do have a problem so that we can stop someone getting really hurt.
Land rover eventually got back to me and after taking the failed jack to my main dealer gave me a replacement jack and paid for the bottle jack I had to buy. The new jacks looks like the old one so I have no idea whether it is up to the job.
