I say worse.

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is there to send exhaust gas back into the engine on overrun. So when you lift of the throttle (say downhill) rather than putting in air/fuel mix into the cylinders to burn it pumps through exhuast gas as part of the compression cycle instead. Why burn fuel when you don't need to generate energy.

So if you blank then, the engine always has to pump through fuel, hence more consumption in theory, of course driving style and road types will have a bigger impact overall.

This is why when they fail and stick open you get no power, as when you try to accelerate instead of combustible oxygen you have exhaust gas in the cylinder as well.

On topic of consumption, our manaul does ~27-28 during fill ups but thats mostly due to short trips and wife's right foot, can get 29 on longer runs.

Fuel guage ALWAYS lies by 2-3mpg on ours.

I wouldn't expect any fuel to be used on the overrun TBH on modern engines. The electronics should shut it off - unlike the old mechanical pumps that would keep fuelling.

I understood the EGR's worked at low revs and power to recirculate the nasty stuff, possibly overrun too.

Just some actuals from my D3 manual 05

Blanked EGR and fast road intercooler but no re-map

mixed motorway and A roads over 233 miles - 28.9 mpg
Local big hills and short trips over 64 miles around the pennines 22.5 mpg

Seems OK to me

I know I'm thick, maybe!, but what do you mean by use the Torque?

Use the torque and the gear stick... better fuel, hustles along VERY nicely and also much less stressful too.

You could also consider adding an LPG tank to your diesels, that should give more mpg/power. Done it to Disco 1, and the difference is distinct. Manage to get an extra 5 mpg out of it.

Don't know if anyone has tried on a D3?

As a new owner (6-8 weeks) I was a little disappointed with a return of 21.8 average. Mainly on 6-14 mile runs and lots of hills and I naturally worried about the egr issue. Today we went on our first run across country to the m1, when we got to Chesterfield it stood at 40 mpg, great. She then hammered it up a dual carriageway and the m1 (80-90 mph), coming home she slowed a bit then hammered it again and we returned with an average of 28.1. At times we were well in the 30's so I am happier than I have been. The overall journey was 60 miles.

recon you didnt set the mpg and the odmeter to both to zero at the same time when stationery as 40 mpg would be widely out.

BTW the D3 uses the average figures over a period of driving weeks/months so the only way to do it with any certainty would be fill up when the empty lights on, write down the mileage with you fill up and then when you refill Thumbs Up

Hi we reset the av mpg setting but not the odometer when we were doing approx 20 mph (forgot when we set off). The first part of the journey was slow a roads Inc a downhill part. It looked like it was working okmas the heavier her right foot the lower the average figure went,
I will do the fill up thing but it when I get chance. I would have liked to got 30 plus average but overall was happy with the figure.

55 Plate - HSE Auto -

Averages 23 - 29 mpg - dependant on whether it is my foot or the leaded foot of the wife

Not towing and on long steady run will get up to 30-32 mpg dependant on road type and terrain (M5 heading down towards Exeter returns 32 mpg at 60 MPH - really trying)

Towing 6 berth tintent returns 20 - 25 mpg - use autobox to 50 MPH then select command cruise and put it in 6th for best return on mpg, be aware box drops to 5th at 50 MPH no matter what the terrain.

Otherwise average is 23 - 25 - not bad for something as aerodynamic as a concrete block and weighing what it does...

2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Auto Java BlackDiscovery 3

On a recent 4000 mile road trip round France, with 3000m of 75mph motorway cruising and 1000m of Alpine passes and countryish roads, I averaged 30.9mpg. That's real, not from the on-board display (though it showed 31.5, so can be taken as pretty much accurate).

I have a 2005 HSE auto and just did 1000 miles from the Uk down to France and back. Way out got 30mpg on the motorway sat at 80 mph.

When i got home we had dropped back to 26.9 mpg which i think is fine. Significantly up since we had the belts and the service done.

Brim to brim 500miles = 27.7mpg, Trip meter recorded 30mpg
This included a 320 mile round trip to Legoland, Windsor Castle with motorway driving a steady 70mph Smile
