Transmission and Metal Pan Conversion Questions & More: |
|
I just installed the ZF metal conversion kit pan on my LR3 (with a lot of patience), and am wondering if the fluid level must be checked from the fill hole in the bottom of the pan at the proper temp, or is it still ok to check it on the side fill port? Also, are people reinstalling the heat shield assembly under the new metal pan after installing? A couple of those small screws holding up he mounts frame were a real challenge.
Also, for the crank and differentials, are people following the volume based approach to servicing these fluids as specified in the service manuals? I have read online that many shops are just filling the differentials and crankcase to the bottom of the fill hole now. What are your thoughts?
I greatly appreciate the feedback!

Thanks Flack. That is one of the better consolidated write ups I have setting proper fluid level. Is it reasonable to assume that filling to the fill port on the side of the transmission or using the fill plug in the bottom of the metal an result in an identical fluid level? Or should I be following the 6HP26 instructions that ZF publishes for fluid levels on the same transmission with the metal pan (as is installed on the BMW's, and only check through the bottom fill port? I removed about 4.5L of fluid and that's about what went back in, but I have read a post or two online that the metal sump holds about 1L less fluid when checking through the bottom fill port.
I greatly appreciate the help!

My opinion, having fitted both types of pans is fill via the side level hole at the correct temp (fluid temp between 30 & 50 deg C move selector with engine running between all gears, then top up the level until it just runs out.
I haven't measured the difference in height between the metal pan & the level plug on the side, but it's safe to assume as the pan is of such a similar design, that checking via the original hole is correct, regardless of what level BMW might use, perhaps the Discovery might have a little more due to more likely to be on extreme angles?
HTH

As SteveNorman says use the procedure I sent you as long as you have the temp and the engine running you will be fine.

What are your thoughts on the heat shields? I assume they were there to protect the plastic pan, as they wouldn't do much more than that.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I've figured out where the confusion between the bottom and side fill ports with the metal pan came from:
http://www.thectsc.com/bmw-6hp26x-transmis...el-oil-pan
Apparently, on BMWs with this transmission, the side fill port is blocked by a drive shaft, so they added one to the bottom of the pan for easier level checking. That said, checking from either port should yield the same results.

Thank you so much for the clarification. I'm still thinking, though, about how many users changed the mechatronics sleeve when renewing the oil pan.
Mine is close to 11 yrs old and does not drop a drip. Gearbox Oil has been changed every 2 years and the D3 is now less than 90k miles old.
Doing so many fluids changes (coolant, tranny and brake fluid) has shown me in my 25 yrs of LR ownerships that flexible pipes, rubber seals, brake pipes and so on remain flexible and in very good condition for much longer periods of time.
So that is why I am reluctant to renew the mechatronics sleeve just in case something breaks... Regards, Robert

Sorry if I seem a bit dull but do you mean the sleeve for the mechatronic electrical harness ? Mine is leaking and while I've got the car in bits intend to change the sump and double flush etc, does anyone have the part number for the seal/sleeve ? Jarrod

Transmission Fluid quantities don't match. |
|
Hi, completed the metal pan conversion today. Total nightmare, but only because one of the plastic sump torx bolts sheared off like it was made of butter. Messed around using some extractors but still no joy. I have a feeling it may have been crossed threaded when it was manufactured.
Anyway, I took 3.8 litres of fluid out of the box and it was really grim leaving me feeling glad I did the fluid change early.
However, I have only managed to get 2.8 litres back in. I took it for a run to warm up the fluid and did a good few gear changes, but the box was still full when I returned. I am doing a dual flush so will have the disco up on ramps again next week. Just a bit worried that I am a litre of transmission fluid down. Off to france in 3 weeks so want to get it sorted.
Any ideas?

You need to have the engine turned on, to do final level check,
From your post I can't tell if you had the engine on?
