Thanks Lynalldiscovery and Tripe.

I do not own a infrared temp gauge. A little rudimentary, but I basically left the new fluid outside overnight
stored underneath the car so when it was replaced it was a similar temperature. I guess this was a way to basic approach.

Having changed the oil I then run the engine for a short time using all the gears, but kept the foot brake applied. I then checked the level having to add 0.4 litres.

What should the temperature oil be when i check the level?

Hope this further information helps.

Cheers

Flack covered the temperature earlier in thread - see his link. 40 to 50 degrees. An infrared thermometer is cheap and worth it for the hassle of over or under filling and resultant bongs!

I had a chat with someone last over the phone, mate of a mate scenario who works at one of the landrover places near us... a couple of things he said...
The plastic gearbox sump filter is prone to blocking causing oil starvation and giving symptoms of torque converter slip.
The mechatronic harness seal leak causes oil to enter the harness and short the contacts causing in his words "clunky" gearchanges symptomatic of stator bush wear.

Can anyone verify if this is right ?

He also had an interesting point regarding crank failures. He said that engine oil level is vital in the D3 and especially the D4 as low oil level can cause the failures. Shocked
I don't know if any of that is new or relevant info. Just thought I'd pass on what this guy said.

Sorry Discomadness, but I cannot help with your issue.

Thanks all for your help, with my issue.

The engine running solved the problem. Embarrassingly, I had already read that instruction when planning the job and simply forgot.

As you may have noticed I am not that knowledgeable, yet! I have purchased the disco to get me back into tinkering and can honestly say i love it.

One concern my wife used the disco when the gearbox was short a litre of transmission fluid. She did less than a 80 miles over 3 days. Hoping this hasn't caused any catastrophic damage in the box. It feel ok.

Doubt it. She would have had Transmission Fault on dash if the pressure dropped, typically whilst braking or accelerating hard.

I wouldn't be to worried, I was driving around with my car 0.8 litres down,Before my atf flush and I had no alarms or warnings coming on.

As for not being knowledgeable, we all had to start somewhere, some of us just have the advantage of owning our cars for a lot longer than you 👍

I have used Liquid Moly Top Tec 1800 ATF fluid is relatively cheap to be fair. I still have a couple of litres left, so I have ordered a couple more and do a dual flush. Its best practice anyway.
Thanks for your replies and help.

or if the oil looks a reasonable colour. (can still see thru it), you could use the car for 1 year and then do another change? Maybe a flush and forget is the way to go
