I had similar symptoms after I had done mine. The cable had come loose from one of the brake shoes. I don't think that the actuator should be able to travel to the end if the cable is properly fitted.

EPB Emergency release cable
The EPB emergency release cable got caught around my prop shaft and had to be cut off by the AA on a trip to the Lake District, however the EPB is working perfectly on my 2005 D3, and I have had the car for about 12 years and not had to change the EPB during this period. Everything else - just not the EPB I've had the squeaky events mentioned on this post, mainly after a mechanic has replaced the Disks & Pads and not known how to reset the EPB properly, so I have used the Low Ratio/Reversing sequence on this forum to reset each time. (Thanks Bodsy !)
The last advice from a mechanic was don't worry about it until it goes and then get the whole unit fixed - about £1000. Sods law it will happen on a trip or holiday, and then how would I use the car without a handbrake, because I would have to cut the cables - is there a temporary fix for this? Obviously put it in gear....etc. Would pressure on the brake pedal work if the engine is off? Probably not? I have looked for a second had EPB as I only really need the Emergency Release cable from it, and it does not appear to be a separate land rover part and its difficult to get them second hand.
So my questions are:
1. Does anyone have a redundant EPB unit/Emergency Release cable that I could buy? Is there an after market one? All the ebay ones are send us your existing unit for a repair, and they don't supply the cables. Also is there a temporary fix if it goes as mentioned above - is this possible with the brake pedal?
2. From the look of it the labour involved to fit the EPB on some of the videos on here - it might mean I might as well get a new EPB unit and have it fitted, because I am borrowed time with the EPB unit anyway?
3. Has anyone had their EPB refurbed on Ebay? Has it solved the problem for a decent period of time? But I still need the Emergency Release cable, which I doubt they can supply anyway?!
I would be interested in your thoughts on this oh wise ones!

put an add in the wanted section for an emergency release cable.
(maybe there is enough left under the car to use?)

If theres enough cable left just use a cable joiner and add an extra length of cableAndrew

Cable Joiner
That's a great idea aja4x4 - I suppose I don't even need to thread it back up into the gear stick housing. As long as I can get to it in an emergency. Thanks I'll have a look to see if there's any cable left - hopefully the AA did not cut it too short.

I've just replaced the gears and both cables, wow the pain of tons of rust in the eyes, I've still got a problem. when i pull the handbrake switch the cables engage then disengage then engage then disengage then there's a short screech. If any one can point me in the right direction i would be forever grateful

Think I may have figured it out… I’m trying to turn the ‘nut’ right at the end .. ‘after’ the square ‘nut’ at the end of the brass rod…. I’ll get back on it tomorrow…

You must try to turn the brass rod. This rod is jamed against the square nut. Try to turn the brass rod with a big screwdriver and a hammer by hitting against the ribs on the rod.

Give a try to ask in this thread how many turns a new replace wire should have?
I have replaced both cables, changed the gears, and im trying now to put everything together.
But i cannot find anything about how many turns for the black plastic screw to start with.
I have no diagnostics to turn for service mode with, so im doing it manually.Disco 3 2008 man SE
