My experience with Specialist Cars of Luton was positive. I saw the car competitively priced on Autotrader. Called up and did the whole deal over the phone. I asked him about the disco he was selling and he described it truthfully. He asked me to describe my PX, warts and all. He offered me book for my PX, but I then upped it by £500 as I said I would probably try to sell it privately. He was asking book for the disco, but did a deal at £250 less, as long as I bought it if I found it to be as described.

He was also happy to sort out my private plate admin, plates, and even put £40 of fuel in the tank for me. His story was that he'd taken the disco as PX on a new BMW, and it was too good to send to the auction.

It would have been a pain for me to sell my old car. He put my PX up on Autotrader for 2k more than he gave me, but dropped it by 1k a month later. I guess it sold for that or thereabouts.

I guess the take away from this is that this trader was/is able to make a living from paying book+ and then selling for book-, making a grand or two on each transaction. He doesn't need to offer silly money for trade-in, nor does he need to ask crazy money for cars that'll sit for weeks unsold. I'd be happy to deal with him again. Thumbs Up

I got mine in leafy Chiswick, got a lift to Dublin a friend took me out Hilton park service, another friend met me there he drove down from Heysham took me to see the car that night. I left the house at 1am on a Tuesday and it was parked back on my drive at 6.30am on Wednesday. I would do it again anytime, love the whole car buying searching reviewing thing.
I get a right buzz from it I know sad I need to get out more. Roll on the D4 purchase can't wait for it.

130 mile round trip for mine (Norwich) so not too bad, dealer agreed to have any 'warranty' work done by my local indy and the invoice recharged so that was a real bonus Very Happy

I done a 1K round trip in a day to view mine down in Whaplode,Norfolk, was up for £15.500,phoned the guy with intention of dropping him down to £15K,didn't get the chance, guy said took it in PX for his supercharged and just wanted to get rid at £14k,i was down like a shot and done the deal, drove back down 2 weeks later with SWMBO in the golf, picked it up and carried on over to Reading/Feltham to drop the Golf off(company car going back)Then made weekend of it in London and had a very smooth and uneventfull drive home on the Sunday.

Seems it was a bit of a con anyway, called them they said they had it took all my details for px, called me back and said sorry was sold and gone already.

And it's still on the land rover approved used site

Tried them again, say it's still available give details and mention you don't want finance and it's magically sold again lol

I've bought 4 cars in the last 6 years for members of my family - all have been more than 100 miles away and 4 of them included px's... The trick is to do loads of research beforehand, know what you ought to be paying, know what you ought to be asking - such as has it had a 105k service - and don't be too greedy on what you want for your px... I've found that most dealers worth dealing with are quite happy having a deal over the phone/t'interweb...the only thing I would suggest is to make sure there's a warranty that you can 'cash in' locally to you - its a bit of a pain having to negotiate fixes over 100miles away!
