Transmission Fault - How Bad?! |
|
I've just just got back into my car after stopping off to pick something up from the shops and the car wouldn't start. "Transmission Fault" flashed up on the display and then "Parking Brake fault" very briefly. The car then lost all power to the point I couldn't open the boot or lock the doors with the key fob.
I've looked in the manual and this suggests a failure in the automatic transmission and I should seek specialist assistance.
Has anybody else Experienced this and if so what was the problem and solution?
Secondly how bad is this and how much is it going to cost me to get fixed?

Sounds like alternator failure. Very common issue.
An alternator ranges from £200 or so for an aftermarket one, upto around £280 or so for a genuine unit. Allow an hours labour to fit if you are taking it to a garage.
FYI, all "re-con" Land Rover units (LR008861) come labeled as such, but actually comes as a new unit inside the box (YLE500400) My D3 Build Thread

It's an 07 plate and it's the original battery, i don't really know how long it should be lasting. Both explanations may answer the question of why all the power disappeared but what about he "transmission fault" message?

Mine's also on an 07 plate (March 07) and still on original battery. 86k mostly motorway miles. I'm sure I'm going to be greeted with the same message one of these mornings.
When the alternator fails, it quite often takes the battery out with it, unfortunately.

It does feel like alternator and/or battery issue but I'm still a little puzzled by the transmission fault warning indicator. Any ideas?

Disco_Mikey know's his stuff!
The Transmission Fault message will almost certainly be a red herring. The car will display all manner of spurious messages when the battery voltage is low.
If you have a digital multimeter you can test the voltage across the terminals. Sounds like you do need to replace the alternator, though.
