Just found in Wiki a photo guide on how to replace the diode pack, which according to Flack (author) is responsible for 99.9% of alternators not charging (when faulty). I'm &^%$£" useless at soldering, a required skill..
Is there an idiot's guide to removing the alternator? Can't find one. Car is outside and it's -7C, snow is forecast and I'm totally hissed off! Why do these things happen when it;s the middle of winter...?? Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

I always seem to have trouble finding stuff, I think it's age related.. (and being thick!!)

any 12v car battery will get her running if you have access to one that is ie take one out of another car and start her up test it with a multi meter see what the alternator is putting out just think you should try that as if you do take it off and its fine you will feel gutted
also check the fuse they have a 5amp one in the fuse box which can blow (in the engine bay fuse box next to the battery)
Many thanks for that!! I'll have a look-see with everything crossed.. Have a VW but I'll bet the battery terminals are different! No jump leads - yet! Ed,Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

it will work there will be loads of room when you get your battery out the smaller one only needs to be in for testing and the battery leads in the lanny will move enough definitely to get them on the terminals good luck were here waiting to help! pity your so far away!

Be VERY careful to get positive and negative the right way around if using an incorrect size/type battery.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

No bother, I never mix my terminals, leads or drinks!!!! OK, just fitted the VW battery, which has the terminals the right shape and the right way round.... In fact it's almost the same size as the D3 one.., which may prove useful in future. The Disco started and guess what??? drumroll... Static 12 volt, running 14 volts, revved, 15 volts... So Si, thank goodness you mentioned that.. BUT as I posted a few days ago elsewhere..., the original battery died and wouldn't charge, sent for a new one which was fully charged and ran the motor for 2+ days before it died and wouldn't charge... My conclusion after this melee is that both batteries are faulty (but why was the new one OK to start with?) or there's an intermittent fault.. Or...????? ok thats good news what i would do first is take it for a run and when its warm check it again to see if the charging rate has climbed i have a battery meter plugged into the cigerrette lighter which shows voltage while running around i will post a pic so you see what i mean and an ebay link now what you are looking for is baasically the voltage rising (ie over say 18v) as the alternator warms up
thats one thing to check the next is this
what i would do is check the earth lead take it off make sure its not corroded were it bolts to the car when you look at it it will go behind the fuse box towards the wing make sure its not corroded you will have to take it off to see
Thanks Si for those useful tips which I'll check out, The motor is in very good, low mileage nick, but it is 7 years old so the earth strap is a good one to check... I'm aware of a voltmeter for the cigarette lighter as I tried to get one locally but they haven't been invented up here yet.. The new CTEK charger just arrived in the post, which may help, and the replacement battery should arrive tomorrow.Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

New battery came, fitted it, went for drive and stopped every couple of miles to check the voltage. Used my multi-tester on a redundant plug and lead for the cigarette lighter so I didn't have to get out. Checked the battery first with the new CTEK (impressive bit of kit).
Readings were 13 volts with engine off, 15 volts all the time with engine running, assume it was topping up the battery. 15v with everything on, lights, fan, etc.. . Earth connection in pristine nick. So, I can only think that the first new battery was u/s and my only other thought is a 'black' loss which if present I'll find in the next day or two. Thanks for all the help. Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

Did you do a parasitic draw check to see what amperage is being pulled from the battery when parked up?
Not saying 2 dead batteries in quick succession cannot happen (especially if the alternator was bad, which is not the case here) but given your symptoms I wonder if we have found your original fault. There could be something undesirable pulling power when switched off.
Just checking the battery voltage in the evening and in the morning would be a start.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
