To keep you warm and your engine at optimum operating temperature. If you're that fussed pull the fuse for it!06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

See my original post. The engine is getting to temp but the heater isn't turning off when up to temp, ie above 75deg. My last comment was meant tongue in cheek, why the sour faced comment?

Er, it wasn't sour faced, hence the exclamation mark... I was trying to be helpful
You have received a lot of explanations about what the FBH is doing and why, and you accepted that earlier in the thread. But you've then complained about the fuel consumption. So if that is the main concern, and you don't want the FBH to run, pull the fuse.
In my experience the FBH needs all the encouragement it can get to run, they don't just keep running on for no reason.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Exclamation marks are not usually used to signify a friendly comment. Yes, there have been a number of explanations of how the fbh works. None!, (note use of exclamation mark), however, have provided an answer as to why an fbh might stay,on if all the usual critetia are met, rather than turn off after the engine has reached the correct operating temperature. I had thougt someone may have had the same issue, found a solution and so saved themselves a few bob by decreasing their cars fuel comsumption.

My FBH
I am a newbie to both the incredible D3 and the forum. The advice I have received and the wealth of support and friendly information on here is outstanding. I have learnt from both professional and very knowledgeable D3 owners with much experience - thanks to all.
My FBH for what it's worth runs when the outside temperature is 6 degrees or less and runs all the time it seems on my shortish journeys. It is meant to do that and fitted by LR for a reason I am sure to provide heat quicker to the engine and the passengers and most likely to assist engine efficiency!
I have had a Webasto controller fitted from BAS which allows me to switch it on or off remotely without he engine running and is a brilliant and useful add on.
Long live the FBH as it is there for a reason and is a welcome part of my D32 x D3's (Twins)

Why is it an issue? The fuel it uses is relatively low.
Most of the changes in consumption are due to it being colder and the differences to the winter fuel to keep it from waxing.
I've run diesels for years - all except the D3 without a FBH - all dropped about 10% in the winter. And the need for a FBH was amply demostrated to me when I had an Audi A6 which I could drive from home to the center of Birmingham in rush hour (About 8miles) and the car not get warm and the heater barely working.
D3 and FBH and it is upto temperature in about a mile or so.
I suggest you don't worry about it and enjoy the car.Mark.

Fud,
Trouble is we do not know if your coolant has gone above the required temperature or not. As explained, the gauge in the instrument binnacle will show in the middle even when the engine coolant is not up to normal running temperature as it is weighted to the middle for a broad range of temps.
If you could find the real temperatures we could do a diagnostic. We need the temp the ECT thinks it is (via the OBD port) and if that temperature is in doubt then we would need the real temp of the coolant at a few points (using an IR thermometer). This would enable us to check all the factors that go into the running of the coolant system. Webasto software would also help.
On experience at this time of year the FBH runs most of the time. But if you are worried you need better information than the instrument binnacle can provide.
I am really trying to help you and if you were close I would look it over for you.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

I don't have any prob with fbh(famous last words), my heater has always kicked in at 4*, I have just had the car serviced and it now kicks in with an ice motif before it at 5 degrees, this shows the temp it kicks in must be adjustable with the correct tool,- Failtmate?
Another interesting point, there is no legal reason why the FBH cannot be run on red diesel providing a separate fuel tank is used soleley for this purpose It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Early start for D3
Wife goes up to our horses at 05.30 so like a great husband I press the FBH on switch on the BAS Remote from the kitchen window and warm the car for her before she goes.
SWMBO thinks the remote was fitted for her! Please don't tell her different as I use before I leave work in the evening for my own comfort!!!

.....in very cold weather...stopped at the services to get fuel - & immediately engine started the FBH starts....even though car / engine / coolant up to temp.
So however / wherever its programed & controlled from....it considers the outside temperture being whatever the temp is before the engine / coolant..
At one fill up in France I had other users of the service station in a panic when they saw the "smoke" fromthe wheel-arch...lots of arm waving & shouting that something wasnt rightBREXIT - done properly.
