And a big thanks from me too!
Any pictures etc. would be cool, especially of how to actually get to it!

In fact my daughter has a Toshiba laptop, and perhaps I should try opening it and just snatch one of the speakers...?

Well as promised guys, here is the "how to" document for the nitty gritty part of changing the speaker.
http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...peaker.pdf
There are actually a couple of spare large sized holes provided on the PCB which are perfect for attaching wires without having to get to the other side of the PCB at all
Also if you look at the last picture you can follow the 2 tracks for the speaker connections down to the TDA7052A 8 pin surface mount driver IC (IC11).
Note the bank of resistors just to its left, labeled A1 to A4 where only A1 is fitted. This looks like options to alter the resistance on the input side of the Driver IC, most likely as a volume control.
If replacing the speaker does not solve your problem, then it is highly likely that replacing this IC will.
Pretty much any small speaker will suffice although the bigger it is the louder it will be and you might then want to add a resistor of around 20 to 30 Ohms in line with the Red wire.

No worries krausei
We had all the bits right on hand to easily knock up the how to with a few pictures and show you the way.
I am sure me and the guys would just love to learn how you and wonky get on in respect of using this to solve your no sound problems.

Hi again!
Repair done succesfully!
Whith what? A speaker from my daughters dead labtop! The speaker fits perfectly in the old housing, and the sound is the same as before, but slightly louder - but as I'm a former drummer, this is only an advantage...
Thanks again Colin for the guidance - in fact it's no big deal, when you know how before you start - as with many other things in life!
Merry Christmas!

congratulations Krausei,
I just joined the dots and detailed the technicalities for you.
That you followed our advice to achieve success is still all your own work and merit.
Now the sounds you hear may well be the same that others hear, but somehow you will always have more appreciation of them.

Sorry to bring this one up again, but can anyone tell me what speaker to buy here? I have looked for piezo sounders but they don't seem right. I think I am after a miniature speaker but could do with a pointer and preferably a Maplins type part number 07MY TDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey + Alpaca

I cant help you with a spare part no, as the speaker, as far as I'm concerned, doesn't come alone, but is a part of the cluster. I think it's approximately 20-25 mm. in diameter.
It's a real small size speaker familiar to these:

The 1.0 or perhaps 0.75 would be my choice...
