Enjoying my Wintrac Xtremes
After years of living with the Scorpion Zeros all year round, I went for full winter tyres this year. I havn't been sure in low temperature and icy conditions whether they offer better grip and stopping power (they probably do but it's hard to tell) but in the snow they are far superior especially under braking even with TR switched to grass/gravel/snow. Nice to get to try them out finally.

They're good, and last for miles too. I got over 40,000 on my last set, and they were still legal when I chenged them.Previously:

Andy,
Been realy chuffed with mine, even with no snow. Are there any insurance problems running winter tyres all year round as I'm tempted to leave them on as I prefer the ride to the road tyres I have...
Then just put the MTR's on if out for a play which is only a couple of times a year.
Cheers, Richard.Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!

Privilege ask you to notify them when you put winter tyres on and take them off, and they send you a different insurance schedule each time (at no extra cost). But there was never any question of when you take the winters off.
I used to run Continental Conti Cross Contact Winters and Continental said they were fine for running in summer too.
So you could have an all year round winter tyre (daft though, as you want to give yourself as much tread as possible in wiinter, and they do get a bit bouncy in warm weather).

I think it best to let your insurance company know, at least you have then crossed tee's and dotted i's.
We have many running the Wintrac all year round now and most prefer the ride, mileage is very good as well. fitted five sets today in all.

Another vote here too for Wintracs, via Andy
Just back from Alps ski-ing and they were fantastic on fresh and compact snow with MSG selected.
Also very good on the heavy fresh snow in Rutland this weekend - Car felt very surefooted.
Blo dy good breaking in the wet too which I can attest to on the Frog motorways on the way home!
Andy also suggests inflating 3-4 psi over standard pressures.
CliveIf it don't fit the third time - try a bigger hammer

From the Pirelli website:
3) But if it’s true that winter tyres perform much better than summer tyres why can’t I keep them fitted all year round?
Winter tyres have been developed to offer excellent performance when the temperature is below 7°C.
During the summer their compound, which is softer than that of summer tyres, wears much more rapidly and hence doesn't perform as well.
At higher temperatures and particularly when in the dry, braking distances with "Winter" tyres increase by at least 10% +
Ken once posted a good graph from Mercedes showing test results using winter tyres in the summer. It's on here somewhere.
It's why in the parts of Europe where the fitting of Winter tyres has been standard practise for years, they switch back to summer tyres as the ambient temperature begins to rise. Otherwise they'd use Wintracs etc. all year round and save themselves the hassle.
Personally, I'd not want to compromise my D3's braking capability during the months when the average ambient temperature was over 7C. I'd also want my Winter tyres to have as much tread as possible during the winter months.
But each to their own etc.

You are entitled to you opinion but take a look at these very happy users.
We also have many, many more away from this forum on all 4x4's which swear by them, customer is always right as they say and very happy customers make me very happy.
One certaintly in life, apart from Death and Taxes, is LT's standard response to anyone that says they found the Wintracs awesome as an all year round tyre Previously:

I just think that the facts about Winter tyres should be known. They are not designed to be used all year round. That's not to say that you can't, but please be aware of the consequences of doing so.
It's the same with Mud Terrain tyres, some run them as their only tyre. But the facts are that braking distances, noise and mpg are all increased when compared to a road tyre. I ran MTR's for six months, I survived, had no alarming instances etc. but I knew full well that in an emergency braking situation it would have taken me considerably longer to stop.
So if someone asks about running Winter tyres or MTR's, I tell them the facts. I personally think that's much more responsible than simply saying that I love them and I've never had any problems.
The winter tyres on my Saab will be swapped over once the temperature picks up, probably mid March I'd guess.
