So is the bit that breaks part of the tensioner or part of the block or head? Is it replaced when you change the belt?

yes, 1,000 miles before this. Torque settings all observed. Thumbs Up

I notice another RRS that had the same after 5,000 miles from changing the belt.

Well I'm gutted for you. I presume you did it yourself, and having done timing belts before (not on a D3 mind) I know how meticulously people check things.

There must be something causing this, if it was a weak casting then surely there would be lots of these failing on vehicles that had not had the belts changed.

One thought I have had is this: when you remove the old tensioner, is the bolt excessively tight to get out? ie is the bolt partially seized, thus causing overloading of he casting during removal. When a new bolt is torqued in correctly, the damage has already been done. Is this possible?

Oh, I didn't realise all those had not had belts done. That's my theory dead.

Did the one's you know about have the tensioner still fitted with the bolt to the bracket, but the bracket broken away from the housing?

regards
Steve

Yes that would appear to be the case from the descriptions. 1 of them was the top bolt idler though.

I have done 7 belt changes now, the last one was about two months ago, when I first heard about this possible design fault I have checked the casting out on the cars I have done and not seen any signs of cracks, but the next one I do I am now armed with a crack detection kit.

If you look at Bodsy casting the break looks new ( don't know about the others) so must have been ok when the belts were done. If there was a break when the belt was done there would be a dark edge where the break had started.

I think Disco-Mikey has commented on that if something had broke and jammed the engine from turning then I agree with his comments that the belt would have been stripped of teeth before snapping off the tensioner, I have seen plenty of cam belts with teeth stripped off after something has jammed up.

I have said before when I first did one of these cambelts on a D3 how fragile the mount looks for the size of the belt its keeping under tension.

We need to keep an eye on this problem and make LR aware of the failures so far.

Flack Thumbs Up

If it was a fragile design, wouldn't we be seeing cars of all ages with this problem and not mostly 07/57 plates? Was the design different for these years or have they changed it since?

(sorry, just realised, should this be merged with here:

I have a D3 2007 with 85k miles on the clock, last year when I had the car serviced I got the timing belt replaced as the car was 7 years old - I had this done at the same time I MOT'd and serviced the car.

Last night I went to start my Disco and it wouldn't start, all I got was a clunk - so I knew something was wrong and I decided to call out the AA...... Who took my car to my Land Rover Service centre.

I received a call from Land Rover this after noon stating that I need an engine replacement....... I really don't know what has caused this, what I did notice is that there was a peace of metal between the fan blades (this I believe was the tensioner)

My Belt was replaced 12 months and 2 weeks ago, Land Rover States that this is out of warranty and it's going to cost me £9,500 to replace my engine.

Since I have had this car I have looked after it and have maintained it well and have made sure that it has been serviced........

I'm disappointed with how Land Rover have responded so far, how can a belt that is a Land Rover part only last 12 months and 2 weeks!!!!
