Possibly a bad batch? sounds like a 57 plate thing??

Might start totting up the incidents and get the Stats books out - Sonic's was also a '57 plate.

OK we could always ask them through pm and keep the numbers in confidence.
Even if we only use it for ourselves to build a picture. If we have where the repair work has been completed it might give us some reason for argument.
I think LR are aware of this. One guy I spoke to last year told me the same thing happened when the car was three weeks old, the engineers from LR were crawling all over it.

They might have been all over it but did they contribute to the cost of the new engine? Would be a precedent they wouldn't want to set.

Yes they changed the engine under warrenty though, somebody on here says landrover paid for the work, will look to see if it was done outside LR warrenty

have seen this too, low mileage, 57000 miles 57 plate vehicle. Was about a year ago, & was out of warranty, but Landrover paid for the new engine. It was the tensioner casting brroken on this one.

My guess is something else goes tight, causing the belt to put excess pressure on the casting of the tensioner & breaking it.

Regards
Steve

Would there be any way to tell this was about to happen by visual inspection? Crack noticeable in a visible place?

Isn't Steve's question important though: Did these engines end up mullered because the tensioner casting failed, or did the tensioner casting fail because something caused a massive stress on the belt and it just happens to be the weakest link. For example, one of the camshaft bearings siezed, or the fuel pump siezed?

We would only know this if one of these engines was stripped down, and checked over very carefully, and if the valve / head is damaged I'm not sure it'd be easy to tell what the root cause actually was.

My money is on a weak casting

If something were to seize, the belt would more likely shred itself against either of the cam pulleys or crank pulley, I would imagine.

Unless it was something along the lines of the cambelt tensioner has been set too tight, but that wouldnt explain why it is only a batch of 57 plate cars Confused
