This is my first attempt on this site so please be patient.
I Have owned my 2006 d3f from new and done 80k miles without fault. Last Saturday I was about to pull away from home when I had a complete loss of power although the engine continued to run, gradually the car pulled away and then emitted black smoke from the exhaust which seemed to clear the problem after that I had no problem cruising at speed but every time I tried to accelerate I had the same problem.
Is this a regular fault and what do you recommend to solve it

As above Kendo, sounds like your EGR's are away or a least one of them, quick fix with a blanking kit.

First of all, I will need to let you know that this is my first post and so apologise if I get something wrong here!
I've been reading this thread with interest, as my Disco 3 seems to have developed an EGR fault. A few weeks ago, the Engine Management light came on and I started to experience intermittent problems with power. After 48 hours it went off again and the power problems stopped.
I popped it into my friendly local garage (not the dealer) who checked the fault code and told me it was the EGR valves. They cleared the fault code for me but said it was fairly likely to come back and that it would cost me about £400 in parts plus a full day's labour. They also told me it was unfortunate, because on the previous engine there was a fix you could do to get round it but this wasn't possible on the 57 plate Disco 3.
Having trawled the web, I'm guessing that this 'fix' was the blanking plates mentioned by some people. Are these kits not available for the 57 plate Disco? Am I doomed to spending hundreds of pounds to get this sorted?! I'm happy to do bits and bobs on the car myself but am concerned that replacing the EGR valves might be beyond me, as the Haynes Manual makes it sounds like a pretty tricky job.
You are not alone, we are waiting for Pete from BAS to complete the fix he is working on, so in the mean time, you are stuck with getting the fault codes cleared until the fix / patch is released. It may be worth your while adding 300 ml of 2T (2 Stroke oil) to you fuel, this "may" help lubricate the EGR valves in the short term.

Egr valves?
I have a 59 plate Disco 3. I recently had loss of power and an orange engine light on the dash . After reading this post I assumed it was the Egr valves. I disconnected them and cleaned the pipes connected to the valves and is driving ok. I phoned independent dealer who said he could blank off but would need to replace the Egr valves first. Does anybody know whether it is just the pipes the need cleaning or whether it is faulty Egr valves and whether they do need changing before they can be blanked.

Hello - are any of the good people who have successfully fitted a BAS EGR kit able to supply a definitive list of all the tools needed to do the job effectively?
I have the PDF but it doesn't list the tools. I don't want to start the job and then find I need something I don't have.

Some small sized socket extensions and a swivel join come in really useful.
Some rags to shove down the side and under the egrs to stop you losing bolts and bits.
A telescopic magnetic pickup which is fantastic to help locate sockets onto bolts and to retrieve said parts...
From memory, 8mm socket for the top cowling to remove the airbox pipe plus 7mm socket or screwdriver for the jubilee clip that joins the airbox.
8mm socket for some of the EGR pipe bolts. Torx 25 or 27 long bits for the motor that holds the butterfly on.
I can't remember if you need to remove the EGR complete by using a Torx socket or a normal socket. I usually blank with just blanking plates and leave the pipe work in place, so its been a whole since I did one of BAS kits.
I went out and bought one of those 150 piece spanner and socket sets from Halfords today as my old set doesn't have extention and wobble pieces needed for the tricky right hand side. I already have the telescopic magnet. I got one from Maplins with an LED built in to the magnet.
I think I should have everything needed now.

We all blank the EGR valves but why not blank the sensor that send the signal for the EGR to move? This sensor is reading your exhause gas, if not clean it will open EGR to send back into the intake, if you can send a false signal it can stay close. Every time I step on the pedal I get this faulty readings and need to reset it. So the only way for me is to create a false signal.
