Self replacement
Given the availability of the replacement valves on Ebay - is it as simple to fit new valves as it is to fit a blanking kit? I have a MY07 car (bought Oct 06) and have seen the various posts about blanking the EGR system on these EURO4 engines. I was thinking of buying a kit to blank them anyway but is it not the same issues of access etc to fit the actual valves and therefore a DIY job also? Are there any control/ECU issues with replacing them?
I wouldn't mind paying out for 2 new valves and then fitting them myself to save the amount that labour costs, plus the hassle of taking the car to the dealer.AJ

Not an expert but dont think its that easy, dont think you can blank anyway given MY, once the new valves are fitted you'll need diagnostics to clear the faults I would think, so you would need to go to a garage with the kit or know someone with a faultmate.
Plenty of guys on here with Faultmates if your confident enough to fit the valves! 2016 RR Sport Autobiography

Cheers again.AJ

Yeh, thought about it a while back but I've decided to go for a BAS Remap, not only to you get to change your cars remap but you can use it to clear faults.
Ive bought loads lately so SWMBO wont let me spend anymore money!

You cant blank them as yet on an EU4 model, causes all sorts of Engine Management issues etc
Good news is if you replace the offending valve, the EML will go off after 3 'clean' starts, though the fault will still be stored in the ECU memory

What are the engine management issues with Eu4 engines?
With ref to my other thread, http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic62574.html?highlight= I have just had to get myself home from France with the aid of a 2p piece inserted into the joint between the top end of the left hand egr pipe where it meets the air intake chamber. LRA were a waste of time, but thats another story.
The engine warning light was on at first, but went out today on the way home. However, the 2p piece is still in the pipe, effectively blanking it. So, why/how can this happen?
My only thought is that the engine management only monitors mechanical operation of the egr valves, and so long as they are mechanically working, the eml will stay off. In my case it would seem that my valve had jammed, and has since unjammed itself. After 3 good starts, as DM says, the light has gone off.
So, this begs the question, can you blank the Eu4 engine so long as the valves are good? if they subsequently go bad, the light will come on, but at least you wont be stranded.

Hi, block EGR on my 2006, after 400kms I had no power and start smoking black if you give it more gas. After switch on and off again it was ok. Later on same again. Had on the road yesterday and after 650kms done it again for about 20kms and sort it out all by it self. About 200kms on start again, but this time I need to drive it home and the fault is stil there. Now and then there is a engine system fault on, then it disapear again. It come up some times if you rev up the engine. SACS said my turbo is gone, I do not think so. If the turbo is faulty it will stay so, not now and then.
The stealer said to me by blanking my EGR valves the engine can not cool down, need the air to cool it. I said he is joking, it is hot dirty air, mechanic said it is stil need to cool engine down.
Now you can see what we need to deal with here in Africa. I think this must be my last Disco, never had any problems with my Defender td5.
I believe all Land Rover owners go to heaven, they already had HELL on earth.
Please I need help.

Namlandy, EGR's do cool the combustion temps by introducing exhaust gas to the combustion, but only at certain engine loads when cruising.
If you are getting black smoke and power loss like you describe, I would be replacing the fuel/air filters, and checking the turbo inter cooler pipes for splits or internal break up before replacing the turbo.

Hi Gareth, I at first dit replaced all filters, next step is to remove all rubber hoses and check them. Turbo I will save for last, there is no noise that indicate to the turbo. I do want to have a look at the actuator, see if the shaft to the turbo is ok. you think it can make the Disco smoke?

I'm not sure to be honest. You better ask one of the chaps who has actually had a turbo fail.

On SWMBO's old one, no go til 2000rpm then a whoooooooooosh of speed & lots of smoke. The other turbo failures just ESF message and no go, either fixed by reboot, or not. There are many ways to enter CFT.

Removed hoses, its ok, now I start to worry. I will start to take out the turbo now. Could it be the actuator on the turbo thats giving me a problem? I think the turbo done about 30 000kms. LR did replaced it once, said u get it as a unit. I always warm up and cool down before and after driving. Sounds like engine is not running smooth if u start driving. If one off the sensors in the air intake is faulty, will there be a mesage?
Sorry about all the questions, i just want to understand this complicated engine. I also do not wat to buy spares on a trail and error basis.
