XY semsor

I've read probably all the posts about the Parkbrake fault issues, and I have had it myself since a couple of months.

I have tried almost every suggestion on this forum, but problem's stille there.

Reverse lights working, PDC sensors works (from time to time) and gear indicator is not slow - and shows the correct gear.

Sometimes the amber warning light disappears when turning ignition of while running (starting again rolling). Sometimes (not always) the engine is dying or runs rough on idle.

Clutch is not slipping.

I read a comment about the clutch pedal level indicator and clutch hydraulic issues, but I have yet to find out how the XY sensor "co-operates" with other components.

Anyone having some input on this - please?

[quote="Stevie B"]Had this problem myself. Park Brake fault light! Loss of gear Indication Number on Dash. Loss of Reversing lights when in Reverse and no Reversing sensor. Otherwise car drove well Question

Went to an unnamed LR Dealer in Saltash, Cornwall. They quoted me almost a grand for a new clutch plus more if I had to replace the flywheel Exclamation Exclamation

I was a little strapped for cash and started asking round non LR dealers and one of them being a former LR Dealer mechanic told me it was the sensor (XY) that tells the Car what gear it is in and it needed resetting. Then he said it can easily be sorted and to do this before doing anything else...Idea

1) Find a long straight and quiet section of road.Neutral
2) Select LOW Ratio.Shocked
3) Reverse for about 200 yards or until you get the beep and the R on the dash gear number indicator. And then a tiny bit more for good luck. Stop, then...Neutral
4) Go forwards in 1st until number appears. Clutch pedal must be fully raised each time.Exclamation
5) Then up through the Gears waiting for each of the numbers to appear. Do not skip any gears!Mad
6) Stop at 6th, back into neutral, switch off engine.Confused
7) After a brief rest, I took a couple of minutes just to make sure all the bad ju ju was gone and to have a quick wee as it was just all too exciting.Whistle
8) Restart and select High Ratio and you're on your way..Laughing

I did this and problem fixed. This (wee optional) resets the XY sensor...Wink

this worked a charm for me!!!
nice one!!! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I hope it is sorted but my last clutch failed at about 20k. Previous ones have gone at about 80k. I did the X-Y reset. It worked briefly then started slipping again. Oddly when we took the clutch out it was almost like new. However, the DM flymeheel had play fore and aft and had three shiny spots on it where the clutch plate had engaged.

Without wishing to put a damper on your euphoria, it might be short lived.

Had this fault again the other day when going to overtake a dawdling idiot holding traffic up on the A19 newcastle. Reset when i had a chance and continued on assuming i had slipped the clutch.

Light has appeared again this morning. Looks like my clutch is on its way out. I cant detect any slip when changing gear/accelerating though.

So what kind of costs should i be expecting, do i need to sell one or both of my lungs to cover the bill?

Could be a fault with the XY sensor itself rather than the clutch. You're probably looking at about £1k for a clutch (parts and labour). The XY sensor is about £200 IIRC.

Phoned the local LR specialist (obviously they use OEM parts)
£1200 if its the clutch
£1600 all in if its the flywheel too
Censored Censored Censored Censored Censored Censored Censored Censored

Mind you, when i took it to them last time they were quoting me £3k plus to replace the turbo as it came up on their fault reader. Turns out it was just the intercooler hose which i replaced for £40. They didnt even look under the bonnet. This is Team Valley Land Rover Service Centre if anyone wants to know.

Going to ring elsewhere today for a cheaper quote then let them investigate

That seems excessive.

You can see how much the parts cost by having a look here:

http://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/kit403-fu...1207-p.asp

Advanced Factors will sell you an OEM (LUK) kit (including DMF) for £530 all in (with a 3 year warranty, I believe).

Is the labour really that much? Shocked

Team Valley normally have a good reputation on here. I don't know what the book time is to replace a clutch and DMF.

A clutch inluding DM flywheel should be £1k max. Go elsewhere.

Ireland 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 Commercial Manual Zambezi SilverDiscovery 3

Good evening everyone,
Have read most/all of the posts relating to this issue for my disco 3 but I can't find the exact problem I have. I recently got a new clutch, flywheel etc put in as the clutch was completly knackered and now I have the traditional yellow park brake light after about 2 mins of driving and no reversing lights, but I have a large 'E' on my gear indicator screen not 'F' as everyone else has. I also cannot engage low range or down hill descent is also not working. I've tried reversing down the road for 200m to see if 'R' comes up on the screen so the XY sensor could be recalibrated but it just stays on 'E' no matter how far I reverse. And I think the reason I can't engage low range is because the jeep doesn't know what gear its in so it won't engage low range in case it's not in neutral. Does the 'E' mean the XY sensor is buggared and needs a new one and if so is that an easy fix? It's not a gear box out again job is it? Any and all info greatly appreciated!?

Thanks John,
So you reckon the mechanic didn't put the XY sensor back in correctly when the clutch was changed. Either that or the wiring is after breaking when the gearbox was being put back in?

Can,t see how you could fit the xy switch incorrectly. Could be the loom is faulty in some way. When Mikey fitted my new xy switch we replaced the loom just in case after eliminating the ecu. Does the car start ok or do you need to put it into neutral to start it ?

As an aside if the gear box was out it would be prudent to check that the bracket on the gearbox which supports the cross over pipe has been bolted up along with the breather hose.

Everything is working perfect except for the issues mentioned. It's never driven so well actually. I put a new battery into it as well. I think it must be the XY sensor or wiring but I don't want to have to take out the whole bloody gearbox again to get to the sensor and the wiring if at all possible. I'm not sure if I have any option though now.

Best to get the codes read. You can replace the sensor without taking out the gearbox.just drop the rear end to give you room.

Great, I'll say that to my mechanic and see what we come up with.
Thanks.
