I'm confused, both are built on the same chassis and as far as I can tell the RRS doesn't have any more equipment. Then why does it cost more! And if there isn't much difference why spend more on a RRS?
Having said that if the price were the same I would have bought a RRS (Don't need 7 seats etc)

extra letter in the name R A N G E is one more than L A N D on the bonnet - easily justifies the difference, do you not see? Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

It's all the extra cutting, welding and making good that makes up the difference. It takes time and money to convert each D3 to that shape...Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Marketing - it doesn't matter how much the product costs to make, it's al about marketing it and selling it. If the RRS can be sold for more money then it will be. I suspect a D3 actually costs more to make, 7 seats etc.D3 HSE MY05 Auto

The name 'Range Rover' has a certain cachet that 'Discovery' doesn't, and can demand a higher premium as a result.
If people (non car types) ask me what I drive, more often than not I just say a 'Land Rover' rather than a 'Discovery'.
You see, 'Discovery' falls foul of Jeremy Clarkson's rule that if you have to explain what it is or why you have one then you are a bum-hole, or some such.
(Don't ever say Discovery 3,4 or whatever unless you want to look like a complete cock).

Simple really. Footballer's Wives can't usually count beyond 2 so LR can get away with it and they're none the wiser.
I'm sorry...I must be missing the point of the question...why would anyone want to know anything about an RRS in the first place...?The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
