J - AG said they use the glass from Pilkinton - I'm sure not everybody can knock up a windscreen so technical. The ones they use just dont have the badge on them as they are not supplied by LR direct. I WAS offered an official LR one as they didnt have stock, but it was more excess My Youtube Channel http://www.youtube.com/user/NeilDisco#p/u/5/Dz4-Q95GQ2c

What I meant was there appear to be 3 types of screens about:
1) Badged OEM screens (from Pilkington?)
2) Non badged, non-OEM screens (also from Pilkington?), but identical spec to OEM
3) The dodgy non OEM ones with heavy border, gold strips etc

Last time I went to Autoglass (in Basingstoke) I had a horror story… they lied to me about the glass (it wasn't the same as LR glass) broke most of the a-pillar clips and just stuck them on with black mastic, cut my inside trim and fitted the glass crooked. Just terrible.
So this week when the screen finally cracked I insisted on genuine LR OEM glass when taking to my insurance co. (Privilege). They gave me a choice of Autoglass (no chance) and RAC Auto Windscreens. RAC sourced the OEM glass and did a superb job outside my house yesterday. Fitted with care (straight) and all the right toys. Top job.
The difference in the glass is incredible and plain to see:
Thinner heating elements.
Thinner black border (especially at the bottom).
No crappy visible yellow ribbon connectors.
The right shape - so no rubber wedges needed to hold it up.
And now my plastic parking ticket clips work again!
The fitter said he'd done loads of Disco 3's and seen four different types of windscreen, LR OEM (Pilkington), Pilkington own brand and two other cheaper copies. He confirmed they were ALL slightly different and of differing quality. He told me the name of the worst version, which I've now forgotten, but it was something like OLG or OAG ? - He said if you see a fitter turn up with those… tell him to turn around and go away! 2005 D3 HSE

Had a new screen fitted on Monday by Autoglass Ashford. Was offered OEM for £70 or Pilkington for £50. As Pilkington make the OEM I trousered the £20. They turned up with two new A-pillar trims and clips and let me keep the old ones.
So far all good, including some very heavy rain. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
