Oh dear! Went into Autoglass today to get a chip repaired but the tech said that it was just a little too big to do and he may make it worse if he tried. Assured me that it "might" be fine and not spread for long enough. Anyway having read this thread before I went in I decided I would live with the chip rather than get a replacement screen that isn't the same as the original and possibly face problems with seals, clips etc etc.
Driving the 60 miles home, two cracks spread about an inch either side from the chip.
Well, looks like it'll have to be a new screen. Will definitely take some before and after pics to make sure the black trim is the same and no element wires are on show. What a pain.

I have had two new screens, not on a LR, but both times they were not fitted properly. They rattled around and one even leaked when it rained. I have noticed my Xtrail windscreen is now rattling aswell, so I guess thats also had the autoglass tretment at some point before I owned it

Having a screen fitted tomorrow. Have LR Ins but told that I only get a LR part if a dealer fits it, the only 2 dealers in an 80 mile radius don't do that! Can't piddle around as MOT dies next week. Will report how I get on when I get the car back Thursday or so.

I had to have a new screen fairly recently, fitted by Rac auto windscreens thro insurance. They did a really good job that included new black covers on each side. The only problem to look out for that I had was they did not clip the new black covers on properly. What happens is at a certain speed they vibrate and it causes a really weird squeeking noise that sounds like you have a mouse in the dash!
I was pulling my hair out trying to find out what it was. This was until someone on the forum suggested I check the clips are fully pushed home.
As for all the other things ie rain sensor and heated screen all worked great.
Got a bad chip in it yesterday SOOOOOOOOO bloody annoying
Will have to get it repaired I guess

I used to work for Pilkington and can assure you that they DO make the OEM screens as well as supplying the same screen to the trade. There is no difference. There are alternative manufacturers of screens, (usually cheap copies from China), so these may be supplied by some companies.
Just insist on Pilkington and the replacement wil be fine; although the quality of the fitting may not be!56 plate Zermatt Silve

Mine was fitted last April on site at a dealership by Autoglass, side by side I can assure you the Autoglass Pilkington one IS NOT the same as LR OEM, so much so the dealership refused them to fit it.
The Black border around the sides is about 1.25cms bigger and the element wires are NOT as fine.
In the end Autoglass agreed the dealers order an OEM one and I pay a little more to my insurance company.

Had non LR one fitted, picked it up today. Didn't notice if heating elements or border is thicker, all looked fine. Will compare with my LR screen tomorrow.

Well I can report my glass has been replaced by Autoglass.
It was due to be done at the dealers when in for some warranty work - however it was spitting and Autoglass couldnt fit them in the rain Yes, he was serious and they do not bring any cover for protection. LR G'Ford had no workshop space so it needed to be re booked
Anyway, job was done in Kingston Surrey at their depot. I have to say first class service and product. Its not OEM but you cant tell the difference TBH.
Changed all the connector and plugs and the side clips.

Neil must be happy, or he has'nt noticed the GOLD electric strips on either side, which cannot be hidden........., I hated mine so much I demanded it to be removed and a OEM in its place...............each to their own, and we are all only one sizable stone away from needing one......

Reading between the lines, it does sound like there are two types of "non-OEM" screeens around. Several people seem to be happy with their version of the non-OEM, reporting none of the issues like gold strips and wider border etc.

Jason,
Mine doesnt have gold strips visible and is that same as the standard LR one - direct from the same factory.
