Excellent post Disco_Mikey
I think the turbo going on mine is my biggest fear , its on 100,000 but not sure if its ever been replaced but looking at the cost of the job, if it goes , is worrying

My remap was AFTER the turbo was replaced, that puts a cibosh on your theory.
Unless the previous owner had it done as well

TBH, i think a remap would benefit the turbo, as its working harder, so the VNT will be getting a workout more often. Especially if you like the go pedal My D3 Build Thread

DM, thats assuring. My BAS remap seems to rev higher, giving the turbo a better work out, and it holds the gears longer, unless you go switchable on the auto. Still returns better MPG. But am glad to know it could help the turbo

Don't want to tempt fate by clicking "No" - can we have a "Not Yet" vote?
Wondering if anyone has actually used the TT service to get a turbocharger repaired, and how the cost compared to replacement at a dealer?
When I bought my other car (an Audi A4) the dealer told me that the 2.5TDi engine was very reliable if you did plenty of miles, but folk who just drove them around town had more problems. After 200,000 trouble-free miles I can vouch for this, so wonder if driving the D3 more, rather than trying to keep the mileage down, would be a better idea!?!

Recalls are done on a safety basis only ...rather than a general failure 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Got to be honest when mine went ALL I had was the "i" on the dash, and down a little on power. Although a Turbo Vane fault, hardly a breakdown cos she still plodded on. There's a few D3's on here with galactic mileage so the Engine is good for that.

Got a TDV8 sport waiting for a turbo, with my name on it.
Has covered less than 6k in 2 1/2 years. The mechansim on the N/S turbo has seized solid through lack of use.
I wonder how many HA/Ex-HA cars have had turbo faults? My D3 Build Thread

So Mikey, is it usually soot build-up around the vanes that kills them?
I wonder if anything that reduces the soot in the exhaust (a remap, 2-stroke oil?, or just regular high-speed running) makes this less likely to happen? (Unlike that TDV8!)

It is 'usually' the soot build up on the VNT that gives problems...
All 3 of those things will all help reduce soot and/or work the VNT harder preventing seizure
I used 2 stroke in my own car, 2 a bit thousand later, virtually no soot/smoke under hard acceleration any more, and i used to be able to see the smoke at 100mph out the back window (on track days etc.) Now, virtually nothing
Obviously, the TDV8 suffered from lack of use and the external part seized up. My D3 Build Thread

But both of mine have failed at just over 3 years and 48k & 51k miles. OK My car is often driven long drives at 60 to 70 mph with heavy workouts when doing A9 (esp overtaking), plus offroading. Bluie (ex JMC's) was probably driven in a "more spirited" manner before I bought it but since then it has done quite a bit of up & down through the gears driving on hols and one long trip, mostly done at 75mph. I'm not sure what else can be done to prolong the life of the turbo and keep my driving licence, apart from drive at 70 in 3rd gear!
Would be interesting to see if the 20% of failures are in one model year, pos early ones are a better build quality than 06MY ones and later models have a different turbo, isn't there 2 part numbers??
Discuss!

Early ones were pants TBH. Late 06MY, they pulled their fingers out and sorted the actual turbo itself, but they still need an engine module update to excercise the mechanism on start-up...
The original part number has been superceded about 4 times now IIRC...
Saying that though, i have also changed them on 07 and 08MY's

Its not about spirited driving, its about loading the engine up, and pretty much labouring it... Needs to get really really hot to clean it internally
In my car, every week or 2, it gets about a 20 mile drive to warm everything up, on the way to my private test track, which, convienently, has a nice steep hill. 4th gear @ 40mph and floor it up to the redline...My D3 Build Thread
