Has your turbo ever failed?

Simple question to establish if this is a major issue, or a minor problem. Answer yes or no. Thumbs Up

Not on the D3 (I answered no in the poll) Very Happy - that'll be the kiss of death now Rolling Eyes

Previous Volvo S40 turbo went at 65k miles, took out most of the engine as well, was still within warranty thank Censored or it would have cost me about £5k Big Cry

I answered no, because I never had a D3 turbo fail, but my Citroen XM left most of its turbo on the M40 !

I had one fail on an Astra van sitting in traffic by Blackfriars bridge, revs went through the roof, completed surrounded in black smoke, took the key out and bailed out but it kept running, had to jump back in and stall it Rolling Eyes

I wouldnt say a 'major' problem. You have to remember how many D3's have been sold, and how many have had replacement turbo's.

And, you only hear about the bad ones Thumbs Up

54k miles and so far, no turbo problems Thumbs Up

In fact, compared to a lot of other forum members, my car's been relatively problem free. One EPB screaming fault, one EGR fault, one door lock failure and suspension geometry out of true caused by 'bush settle' (all fixed under warranty), and one recent EPB failure (broken wire).

So far though, it's never let me down and long may it continue Thumbs Up

Yep, Been there Big Cry

When Mine went I obviously asked the LRA Techy if it was common, and he said NO!!!!!!!!, the early D3's are a little more common but actually down to careful driving. Big Cry

So you canny win if you drive careful, it soots up the variable vanes and jam open or closed, although the TURBO is ok, its only the vanes at fault. Been trying to find the link from RonP, who also had to source his own replacement, but I think it was a link to a turbo re-manufacturer that repairs these vanes.

Hello All,

Bought my D3 54 plate S in May 2006 and it blew alot of black smoke under hefty accleration. Dealer told me it just needed a good blow out!!!

Took it to Dusseldorf for a stag do and got back it was still the same.

Dealer finally agreed to look and it and found a turbo fault code, changed the turbo, and the intercooler, under warranty Thumbs Up

After that Seerweet as a nut that was at 33k, now she flies and returns up to 31mpg on a good blast.

Just gone over 70k now.

I answered yes.

Cheers Mr. Green

no issues yet in 70K. Never had a turbo problem on any vehicle or boat. Engines always warmed up under gentle load. Occassional use of full revs. always let engine idle for a little while after hard use before switching off.

Diesels like to be run loaded up, say 75% to 85% Thumbs Up

Just out of interest, of the people who voted that they have had a new turbo fitted, how many of you had got a remap on your car when the turbo failed Question

Just wondering if having a remap and the more spirited driving that it sometimes encourages Whistle would actually help avoid the turbo failing through sunday afternoon type slow driving, anmd if there is any anecdotal evidence for or against it Exclamation Thumbs Up
