Hi
Just draining out the oil should be sufficient when changing from ATF to diff oil. Cleaning it out properly should only be needed when going from diff oil to ATF.

To clean out your filler, just put a slug of petrol in there. Wash it round and drain. Repeat. And then open it up (if you can) and let it dry for about an hour.
For the diffs and transfer box, you will probably only change them once, so you may as well put the correct stuff in.
I think this is close to what is called up in the manual

Thanks!
Would diesel work as well, or does it need to be petrol? Diesel is more easily accessible for me, but I can obviously get some petrol too.
If the change is as easy as it seems, I plan to change it every or every other time I change the engine oil, because I just bought a car lift, so I can stand under the car and work (figured a lift was a good investment when I bought a Disco ), so I don't think it'll be much of a hassle, once I know how to do it.

Petrol is better.
Change what with every engine oil change?

The diff oil. Perhaps it's a bit overambitious to change it that often.

Just found a recommendation on LiquiMolys site for the transferbox (Magna Steyr DD295). They recommend LiquiMoly Fully Synthetic Gear Oil (GL5) SAE 75W-90, the same as their recommendation for the front and rear diff.
Do they know something we don't, or is this a "mistake" or at least a daring recommendation on their behalf? I haven't yet been in contact with a swedish LR reseller, but considering what they charge for other OEM parts, I wouldn't be too surprised if the Special Oil is at least 50£/litre.

Hi
I don't know. As far as I am aware, it is supposed to be an ATF, but I have seen recommendations for 75w-90 and 75w-140 before. That is why I don't recommend anything for it, I'm not 100% sure.

I assumed that was the case. Just called my "local" dealer, and got the price. It's 495 SEK/liter, which is approximately 44£.

I have LiquiMoly 1800 in the auto gearbox.
The LR Transfer box oil is about £30 a litre here IIRC. (look on ebay)
If you get 3 litres this should last the lifetime of the car. (change every 75Kmiles)

Hi Oilman,
Discovery 3 HSE 2.7 diesel no mods (to the best of my knowledge) 112k miles no off road stuff (yet).
Engine oil : Castrol/Fuchs/Mobil - give us a clue
Transfer Box - can you supply the LR stuff?
Can you supply the front diff Castrol Syntrax Longlife 75W-90?
Can you supply the diff locking rear Castrol Differential SAF Carbon MOD Plus
Best regards,

Hi,
just bought some Comma X-Tech 5w-30 full syn oil for my D3, 2.7 TDV6.
What's your thoughts on that stuff?
Also, could you please recommend something for the manual gearbox on the same D3?
Cheers
Ross

Hi
I don't deal with Comma, so not sure of the specs of that oil.
You need a 75w-80 for the gearbox and the best proven options are the Red Line MTL, Fuchs Sintofluid or Amsoil MTF. The Millers TRX 75w-80, Castrol Syntrans V-FE, Gulf Syngear FE and Motul Motylgear are good alternatives.
The best ones there are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Mobil ESP, Castrol Edge, Shell Helix Ultra ECT, Millers XF, Fuchs GT1 and Red Line, but the Motul Eco-Energy, Mobil Super 3000, Shell Helix HX7 AF/AG and Fuchs XTR are good cheaper alternatives.
