New engine
Hi all. I have a 2012 D4, 120k miles. Lost power on the motorway Friday, wouldnt even crack off. Electrics came on, but car obviously wouldn’t start.
Garage is saying the engine has seized up, needs a new engine they haven’t quoted me for one yet as it’s the weekend. I’ve done a bit of digging but has anyone had one recently? Garage seems to think it’s not worth fixing and to cut my loses

Have to agree with garage im afraid ,recently had a LR short engine fitted and would have been about £14k by the time your finished. Luckily was fitted as goodwill . but with your age that wont happen. Not very far from me theres a 15 plate that somebody has written off for the same reason , its hard to swallow but sometimes its the only option. By all means ask oval autos but when I enquired they were 10K+ as often the turbo is involved as well because of the swarf contaminating the oil.
You may be quoted less by some garages however be warned its not a Job I would entrust to any of the cheap outfits as corners cannot be cut , one garage I spoke to said they would have no problems doing it but I knew more about the job than they did!
Doesn't Disco Mike have a "convert to tdv8" kit for sale? Maybe another option..

As has been said, Joe (Oval Autos) is a good source of info ... Disco_Mikey is a bit too far away I suspect, but also a clever .
End of the day, I suspect it comes down to how much of a car you expect to get for ~£12K.

Any Jag engine from breakers are snapped up ( pardon the pun).
From my experience you have to also weigh up how much you will be able to relax using it after it goes once. The curse is just starting to show itself in D5s so the demand will increase .
There is the theory that the theft of D4s is being driven by the engine issues and being stolen just for the engine. The NFU have recently had some recovered minus an engine.

but you'd advise that on a straight-out-the-factory Defner showing low pressure on one tyre !
Good point, well made!

Sadly there is an endpoint reality. You've got to really want to keep you 10 year old car and spend the same as it worth running on a new engine. My view is that it's time to move on and cut your losses.D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)

Which engines in the D5 are going? I'm thinking of a new D5 so have a vested interest.D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)
