Gearbox Fault - Completely out of ideas :(

Hey folks,

I have had a problem for a couple months of 'Gearbox Fault' appearing intermittently, I have a GAP IID Tool and usually can clear it and get the car to start and change gears again before it then comes back maybe the next time i start the car or maybe not for a couple drives.

I will paste below the Gap IID errors which specifically seem to be related to when this problem strikes (Sometimes its 1/2 of them sometimes its all which appear at the same time). I wont paste other errors I have as I know they have been there before this particular fault started and don't want to confuse things.

I should say the gearbox etc works absolutely fine when driving, no strange noises etc. I took my car to a local Landrover speciallist and they looked at it along with another issue but after clearing the codes, they couldn't get it to come back. It did come back when i went to pickup the car, they said it could be an electrical fault somewhere which may be very difficult/time consuming to find.

This is what I have done so far to try and resolve:

- Replaced car battery with New (Seen a lot of posts suggesting this)
- Replaced TCCM Module with another (Used) - No difference (Have since swapped back original)
- Replaced Brake Switch (Another popular suggestion)
- Checked Rear brake lights (Both working) - but also they are not Bulbs they are LED version.
- Checked wires at the area where they go into the TCCM Module and all look fine
- Checked battery connections are tight
- Cleaned TCCM connector with contact cleaner (Although connections looked clean with no corrosion)
- Went under the car and unplugged and cleaned with contact cleaner connections which are underneath in the area of the Auto Gear Stick (Not sure if they would be related to Transmission etc but figured it would not hurt)

I am completely out of ideas now Sad and the error is coming up frequently enough to be a problem driving the car most place as clearing the error with IID tool doesn't alway immediately resolve as error sometimes comes straight back after the scan.

Had similar codes, and although several LR specialists said they had had no experiences of my problem, getting stuck in P when hot and unable to start in N or P when hot, found a gearbox specialist who had ZF diagnostic equipment.

Turned out to be faulty range selector switch on/in the mechatronic unit, which unfortunately meant a new unit.

This gearbox is fitted to BMWs and Mercs, and they do have mechatronic issues, the fact that LRs do not have that many issues means many LR specialists have not come across it and therefore haven't a clue where to start.

1 Do the lights on the gear shifter selector panel light up if not check fuse 57 10a and fuse 22 5a behind glove box

2 if both fuses are ok check relays 11 (battery saver) and 16 (ignition) in engine bay fuse box try swapping for another relay but obviously not 11 for 16 and vice versa

Thanks for the info!

Just checked and lights on the parking shifter do come on. I actually have a replacement one of these (used) on its way as I noticed the gearbox fault tends to come up sometimes I move the gearshift. So figured that’s worth a try as only £20.

I’m not sure how to test the relays, I tried searching the number printed on them to find replacements but nothing came up in my search.

Thanks for the info! My LR Specialist doesent have the ZF diagnostics to try. There are a couple more things I’m going to try, if no luck then will get electrics checked but at that point I guess it could be as you say and will need to get that checked out.

UPDATE:

So i'm not 100% certain (About 90%) that this intermittent problem happens only when I move the gear stick to the 'P' position. All other positions (D, R, N) seem to work fine, so im trying to confirm this by not putting it into P at all for now to see if the error will come up.

This problem seemed to start happening the same evening my driver side rear brake hose split and leaked brake fluid everywhere so I am starting to wonder if there is any connecter / earth point in this area which may have got fluid over it causing a short/bad connection sometimes. I have had a look myself and found a small connector which seemed to be to do with ABS/Stability controll and cleaned that with contact cleaner but it looked fine.

I expect its still possible for this to be the mechatronic unit, however I am still thinking it could also be a dodgy electrical connection / ground point somewhere as the problem is so intermittent and gear changes etc all seem completely fine.
