I reckon the fatty is the best looking of LR's range. It's just has a nice understated presence with good proportions from all angles. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I agree. Design wise, it’s the most understated, which is further emphasised by not having huge rims, IMO. First mod was to fit the smallest size rims.
I do like the Velar, but the rear end is ruined by the LR “filled nappy” design trend.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Interesting reading the comments on the D5, as I went from a 2016 !D4 to a 2019 D5 SDV6. I think its a great drive but it does feel different to the D4. I do agree the heated seats are disappointing in the D5 compared to the D4. I do like the infotainment on the D5 and the driver aids such adaptive cruise are very good. It's only been a month since the change and what with lockdown I haven't driven it that much but overall I do like it.

I bought my D4 new at the end of 2013. Recent enough to be invited to the D5 dealer launch event I guess. I wanted to like it but couldn’t. These years later its obvious that its not been a sales success. A look at tells you why.
The Defender will do well, because it looks good. I ‘m trying hard not to go into the dealers for a close look😊
Sorry. Just speaking as I feel.D4 XS just sold. The best car I’ve owned. Over 10 years and no problems.

Thats interesting. I like the Defender but its not suited for me because the boot is too small for my dogs (2 but sometimes 4) .
I keep looking for a SUV to replace my V8 and my Hybrid and I keep coming back to the D5. Looked at alternatives tonight but again came back to the D5.

I bought a new XC 90 last week. I tried the D5 and Defender but decided they weren’t for me.
The D5 drove nicely but my wife and kids hated the rear seats, the electronic plank and how it looked. We all loved the Defender and I nearly bought one and would have done if LR order and deposit system hadn’t have broken
Anyway, I reevaluated what I needed and decided on the XC90. It’s close to a D4/5 but doesn’t have its off road capabilities. However, I don’t need those anymore so the XC90 suits my needs. It’s fully loaded, extremely comfortable and a lovely drive.
After 15 years of D3/4 ownership I’m pleased I didn’t buy another LR but the Defender is very nice and a lovely car, but more than I need.D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)

Having binned my last D3 at end of 2015 I didn't want a D4 next because it wasn't enough of a step forward (for me) from the D3 and I was pretty certain it was up for being replaced too soon in the future.
I nearly went for one of the old Defender 110's but went off down the Jap Truck route (financially the wrong choice but as a daily driver the right choice) - in either case it was only as literally as a stop gap and during that time obviously the D5 appeared and actually I do like it (and if there was no New Defender would have one)
But once the New Defender did arrive and I got a sit in one at the end of 2019 I knew it was hands down going to be my next one and not a D5. I suspect many a D5 sale has been lost in the last 12 months because of the New Defender.... to the point it might actually kill it.

I couldn’t see it killing the D5 just yet, but I could see the D5 range being more limited in future, restricted to a couple of versions, like the Graphite and Landmark, selling beneath the Defender for as long as sales volumes hold up enough to justify continued production.
Give the Defender the option of bigger boot and a proper tailgate and it’d be quite something 👍2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Had a D5 since March 2019. The first one got bought back by LR and replaced with another.
Much prefer the colour scheme of the replacement.
Two D4s prior, I’d say they were both more rugged in terms of interior but I prefer the more plush d5 interior. Anything dirty goes in the D3 or trailer.
Love the electric tailgate, big plus for me now.
Number plate... doesn’t bother me, I’ve not managed to see it from drivers seat yet
Passengers is normally just the boss and she’s quite happy up front, rarely use rear seats.
I am now looking at what will replace it, like Russell, I’d like a plug in hybrid D5 with 3.5 ton capacity.
Better mileage then the plug in RRS though that did 17 miles solo...MY2023 Discovery 5 R-Dynamic 3.0

If I was to be lured back into a LR again it would be the new Defenfer, nothing else is of any interest. But I’m just not sure I want the hassle. I’ve owned a Karoq for shade over 6 months & 4.5k miles now and it hasn’t put a foot wrong. Not an error, fault, bong, message, squeak, rattle, nothing. And it cost me 1/3 what I’d have to shell out for if I was to go for a FE Defender. Do I want to go back to a brand that wouldn’t go 6 weeks without a problem, never mind 6 months? All that extra hassle, do I really want it for a car that’s a lot more expensive to run. FinCon (aka MrsDSL) has given me the green light to get one once they are available a bit cheaper second hand, but I’d have to sell Skippy, which I really don’t want to do. I’ve kind of gotten used to hassle free & cheap motoring, the hassle free bit being the most important.
To get back on topic, re getting a D5, that option hasn’t even crossed my mind. I like to look back at my car and inwardly smile, not sure that option is available.

The Defender has never had a split tailgate, why would they give it one now?

It is, because it’s so damn useful and makes life so much easier, especially in the field.

Series, yes. Defender? Maybe the 130. 90 and 110 were all side hung weren't they? A drop down pickup tail isn't the same as a Disco split .Visiting from rrsport.co.uk
