After being inspired by James I thought I’d have a tinker with my Rrs and a spare D3 cluster just to get my head around the eeprom programming before investing in a dash to try and get it working in the earlier models, the only trouble is now my car no longer starts I was struggling to read the hex and asc11 and translating it into anything other than the dash serial no and part no.s so I decided to read the dash from my car for comparison and fit the spare to get the actual mileage and vin so I knew what to look for, after doing a read on my cluster I decided to write that file to the spare cluster, the spare cluster now shows the correct mileage & vin but my car wouldn’t turn over so I fitted the correct cluster and even tho I didn’t edit the file it still won’t turnover and there’s no fault codes showing wooopsie.
You cannot just write your old file
To new
Cluster things between the new and old dash file have to be broken down and merged
I recon you have muffed something up with the security info on the chip
You also have to use 3.3v not 5v for chip reading on the board
Your cluster now would have to be wipped as if it was brand new and re programmed with a iid tool if that’s the case
Iid tool will not reprogram a used cluster hence why has to be wiped clean firstDisco 3 gone but not forGotten

Hi James I did use 5v for the reading by my eeprom on the earlier one is an M35080 and I did check the specs for the chip and I found it to be 5v but that’s not to say I was researching the correct info lol, I do still have mileage and have checked my ecu infos with the IId and the vin etc is still correct, the complete write was just to see if the mileage and vin went over ok I wasn’t expecting it to start with that one but was quite surprised when it didn’t start with mine refitted.
Am I right in thinking the mileage is the first 2 lines of bytes?Current

It was after seeing your post and the the YouTube vid of the rrs showed it fitted I got to thinking if I buy a cheaper D4 or my10 rrs cluster I can try and get that working first and if that works then it’ll be worth getting the Rangie one and it would help others but as I can’t even read my cluster without F***ing that up it’s not looking good, luckily I’m quite resourceful and sorting mine will help me understand better how things work and I like the impossible 👍Current

Them top lines do Not lookk right
And you are correct the chip is 5v and a 5v programmer would read ok if chip was not on the board
But as your reading the chip on the board you have to use 3.3v otherwise you would get a corrupted image which is what you have by looking at it
and some of the info on the other chips on the board has been read through the chip you have read
Millage is no where near the top it varies from middle downDisco 3 gone but not forGotten

Ah that makes sense with the voltage, you are spot on with the top lines I’ve just re read it on 3.3v and the top lines are the opposite way around and my vin is now showing in the right hand columns, I’ve also found a my10 cluster for less than £50 which I think will be worth trying even if it won’t work, thanks for your help I would have gone around in circles for days ... curious how did you find out about the 3.3v vs 5v situation? I assume I write in 3.3v also?
I’m now going off to hunt the mileage Current

Millage is hard to find unless you have something to compare with
Or drive around for a few miles and look at the changes
The cluster security is the hardest
Part to find and change as without that it wind do anything
Yes everything has to be 3.3v when a chip is onboard
I worked on ic chips years ago when modding cable tv boxes so learnt a lot then 😂😂😂Disco 3 gone but not forGotten

Driving around is the hardest thing at the minute I’ve been staring at this code for hours now it’s like a blur, just to make sure I’m looking for one that reverses for the checksum I.e 1B B2 E4 4D I thought that was it but it don’t add up to my mileage, I can’t even begin to imagine how you figure the security when I can’t find the mileage and I know what it is Current

Yeah thats what I was trying to decipher the cars back running now so I’m going to try and drive it and read it again and see if that narrows it down a bit any other pointers? also I’ve ordered the cheaper D4 style cluster to have a play with £48 with free p&p what a bargain.Current

I’m not entirely sure it still wouldn’t start this morning or at lunchtime so I checked the starter and got it cranking from under the car but it wouldn’t start and still wouldn’t crank with the key but I left the ign on for 5 mins and it started normally and has been fine since... the weirdest part was there was no fault codes showingCurrent

I’ve done 5 miles in it tonight and I can’t believe how many lines of hex have altered and I even made sure the trip was reset back to 0, what formula or software do you use to decode as I’ve tried so many ways and nothing seems right?Current
