Mis fuel advice please

Hi guys, my sister called me tonight to say that my brother in law has accidentally misfueled petrol into his new 2016 D4 Landmark, about £80 worth, then driven over 30 miles before stopping and struggling to restart.. they're currently waiting for Recovery service who are sending someone to try and help them. As I've got a D3 she's telephoned me for any advice and I'm fearful that this might end up being a very costly mistake for them.
I gather he's tried to start it several times having done over 30 miles before he's realised what he's done. Someone's told them it's not as serious with a Diesel engine which sounds odd to me as I've always believed it can cause alot of damage. Any advice that I can pass on to them would be really appreciated.

Drain the system fully, refill with diesel, see what happens...

WOrst case is a full new system (tank/LPFP/HPFP/Injectors/lines etc)

Nightmare. Everything from the HPFP through to the injectors will be damaged. JLR have a good procedure for recovering from such a misfuel event, but at a fall-over-backwards price.

Shocked

^^^^^ Wot I thought. Confused

Some insurances cover the damage as they class it as accidental damage. Might be worth sussing out.

I guess they're going to be at the mercy of LR dealer as the cars on some sort of finance deal, it's something I just can't help them with but It's a worry as I don't think they realise how serious it might be.

Petrol strips the lubrication from the moving parts of the system, which then break up, and contaminate the rest of the system...

Main dealers seem to quote approx £10k to replace the full system... Shocked

Any common rail diesel that sees petrol is going to be in trouble sooner rather than later.

Top advice as soon as you realise what you have done dont even turn the ignition on and call your breakdown people.

People saying it will be fine really dont know what they are on about and are harking back to the old days where a bit of petrol was added to the tank to stop it waxing in the winter.

If its drained and flushed as said above and runs fine I would be trading it in asap!

The problems going to be that he's run it for over 30 miles so it's had time to do it's worst.. I really don't know what I can say to them apart from wait and see what the dealer says.

I've only seen the other side of this when I tell owners that their Disco has likely been misfueled and sold-on. It really is a cruel thing when you see someone inherit the sins of others.

On a 16MY, one would hope any issues would become apparent before the end of the manufacturers warranty...

so as said, all depends on what distance it's been driven

knew it certainly wouldn't do it any good but didn't realise it done such extensive damage

wasn't there something in cars that was suppose to prevent this from happening, ref the size of the pump outlet nozzles so they couldn't be crossed

alas though it seems it can Big Cry

remember regarding a few supermarkets a while back where the tanker filled the wrong tanks

bet that cost them a serious amount of cash to resolve that one
