The problem is that for some odd reason the D5 seems to have attracted some of the same sort of people as those who support Jeremy Corbyn - i.e. have an overwhelming need to react to the slightest criticism and not see reality or be able admit that perhaps its not perfect.Tony

Hehe such is the hate of the D5
Something I said in jest a month ago has been used to attack
I'm not sure why the D5 has incurred so much hate ? It's good but not that good ..... is it. Time will tell?
Important to remember buying a D5 is not compulsory.
Edit: I feel I have lost this conversation and your skills have won.
Thanks for engaging I apologise for any misunderstanding.
Best I don't comment on this thread anymore, once again sorry.

At times it has been a bit unnecessarily polarised on here and bordered on the "if you don't agree with me you are a yummy mummy and superficial" and alternately if you don't love it you are "some kind of mud covered luddite". I also think the whole "dated" debate is not helpful, I have loved my 2 D4's and think the D3 is actually the high point in the design and is to a large degree timeless (with the D4 not far behind). It is the first time I have effectively had the "same car" since 2009, normally changing cars every 2 - 3 years, and that is a credit to the breadth of capability for the D4. For me I am happy with my choice of D5, and without it coming out now I would probably have gone elsewhere. I don't think though as a piece of design the D5 will stand the same test of time, but I like it now. I do think I can still be objective :-
1) I am not certain on the flappy boot, it think it may well prove to be more of a pain than value and is a half hearted attempt to cover what to many is a big step backwards. My wifes car does have an electric tailgate and actually I use it all the time and you do get into the habit quite easily of opening before you pick up something because you can rather than getting close. I am mixed on losing the split tailgate, sometimes it is a pain when reaching in, other times it is great. I can see some people removing the flap after time, and I tend to agree it is a gimmick.
2) I think for the price it should have the full LCD display, at the moment this seems to be part of the RR to LR differentiation but that is already so blurred I am not sure it makes sense. It smacks of being changed during a midlife facelift. The engine choices seem a bit forced, but again I suspect an early addition of new engines if sales drop, and of course a shift to all Ingenium at some point in the future.
3) The rear seats do seem low, for my regular rear passengers who are 9 and 11 it is not an issue but I do get the potential issue, and it does seem a compromise that again for many will be a big problem.
4) The rear is "challenging" which is code for ugly until you either get used to or continue to hate it. I do think it is quite colour sensitive (and of course I would) with the black panel breaking it up and the contrast and with the lights in certain colours it works better. I saw the same effect with the RR Sport, and many BMW's that initially I didn't like but eventually really did.
5) I fully agree the D5 isn't a replacement for the D3/4, and nothing in the LR range addresses the true utility end of the market. From a business strategy it makes sense as the push their entire range upwards and with ever higher prices. Try speccing up a Velar, it makes my D5 seem like a bargain. I do hope the loyal customers on here do get a worthy successor for their needs. For me it is a more practical FFRR at a better price point, but again for many I accept that is not what they want or need.
Otherwise a big thing for me was driving other cars (and I was ridiculed for introducing a comparison solely with a Mondeo's infotainment/driver aids) despite the poster actually eventually agreeing with my point. The technology was just too dated for me and being a geek at heart that was important to me.
All in all perfect no, am I excited yes but I am not too precious to admit that by any logical measurement I should actually still have my '07 RR Sport that would still do everything that I need, but that was got me hooked on the D4, as before then I was an LR virgin.
I think the binary thing you mention on Corbyn actually runs much deeper, and Trump is probably even more extreme example of that (the whole Democrat / Republican thing). Brexit drives similar emotions when the reality is nobody knows which position is better in the long term, so I struggle to understand how people can be so binary and fail to acknowledge the good and bad that exists on either side of any of these choices.
So to end I suspect when I look back over my favourite cars, my D4(s) will be towards the top of the list.

Picked up the other half's brand new Kadjar today, fantastic car and very comfortable. Popped into local LR dealer on way back as we might get a bit more interest from salespeople turning up in a 17 plate car than my old D3.
Showed her and one of our teenagers around D5 to get their unbiased opinions. She thinks its a barge and ugly.
Someone with one of these has a bit of a cheek claiming another car is ugly.

Good comments NeilK. Is "binary" the new "black and white" which of course we can't use now as it would appear racist .

Clarkson’s Verdict: “This car started out in life as the sensible but dreary Nissan Kumquat and was then turned, for accountancy reasons, into a Renault Kadjar. A name dreamt up by an agency when all the other names have gone. No one is going to yearn for the day they own a Kadjar.”
You see every one has a different view of what they like.

Sounds ideal when you dash out with a heavy box in the rain and use one spare finger to open the boot. Kinda defeats the object of an electric tailgate if you've got to put the box down and find the key in your pocket
I'm sure those with D5's will not have a problem - I'm just old fashioned and expect a boot to open when I open it.
How does it work on the D3? How do you manage?

I suppose it is quite useful if you store huge quantities loose golfballs in the boot or use it as a small aquarium. Saves fish and balls falling out.
Wasn't that the main complaint about the D5 not having a split tailgate, not having a lower gate that could be left closed, with fish, dogs and kids falling of all over the parking lot?

Funnily enough my friend tried to show me the boot opening by waving her foot under the boot area. It didn't open no matter how madly she waggled it ...
We had a chuckle about it but I could see it being temperamental and a big pain because it is the kind of thing that will refuse to work when you really need it to work usually when you have your arms full in the pouring rain in the dark.My16 HSE Landmark - 2016 - Current. Indus Silver
