Good find there BLF. I wonder how relevant that would be to the current discussion. Would applying for the patents in July 16 indicate that work had started on those systems or that work had been completed? The bench seat is allegedly already incorporated in the D5.

the site used here is one I got from this site....there are others

Espacenet if you go there lists almost the same stuff....item for item

one thing about patents - you dont patent until you really have to as when you do then innovation is then in the public domain...strangely some things arent patented by choice as tis means the idea & it proves arent seen...they are protected by copyrights.
 BREXIT - done properly.

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

On the D3. It got lost in the facelifting/new modelling (delete as appropriate).

Here's the RR one, just under and to right of dolphin. Whistle

I'm a huge fan of the D3/4 tail gate. It suits my needs almost perfectly. However, I'm well aware that myself and the many others on this forum who share my opinion are in the minority.

For the majority, the current tail gate restricts access to the rear of the load area and simply isn't used as it is by us "whining old codgers". The sliding floor was the solution to the access problem, but was costly and flawed in that it created other restrictions.

I'm trying to remain optimistic about the event platform being a good solution and the D5 in general. Whatever, I'm sure it will appeal to the majority and sell in large numbers.

I do accept that JLR is a very different company to the LR that designed the D3 and all good things come to an end.

Having said all of this, I do see a lot of new D4's on the road. So they're clearly still a popular vehicle. Perhaps I just don't notice the almost universally shaped other large "SUV's" as much Whistle

If the D5 doesn't suit me, I'll perhaps buy a used large saloon to use alongside my new D4 to keep its mileage down. The new Defender or another marque may be the answer in the future, but I could well end up keeping the D4 for a very long time.

BTW, I'm certain that a flat load space isn't possible in the L322 FFRR.

There's good news though Very Happy Ben and I have been to check it out and he's just pointed out that that even an early 16MY D4 has it too...

Flat bumpers to use for the placing of beverage containers are sadly missed by me and lamented on an almost weekly basis.

I loved the design of the original D3, my 2006 HSE suited my needs so well. Which is why I kept it for nearly 150k miles.

Thumbs Up I bet there's a few D4/D5 ditherers having a rethink now, as this is clearly more of a dealbreaker Rolling with laughter

I Love my D4 but its a bit old hat now, I want something with modern technology and better engines which I'm hoping the D5 will have but I also must have a decent workable load space no question. I realised yesterday I don't actually care about the tailgate being one piece its the function the Lower tailgate gives me that is so desirable for my situation and lifestyle. The new event platforms design and engineering is going to be key.

3 hours round sherwood pines this morning and the conversation was mainly around the D5 with my kids rather than friggin pokemon and its apple iPhone announcement week too thats how important this is Laughing

That's the important one, you wouldn't want to have to walk too far to post the flattened beer cans in the intercooler slot when the recipient isn't looking. Whistle Whistle

So am I ...we spent this afternoon in Windsor at the Concours of Elegance ..then went to Runnymede and sat by the Thames. Used the tailgate as our perch, drinking coffee watching the boaters and lovers go by ...it was wonderful.

When I get a D5 I'll sit on the activity platform ....will there be a noticeable difference Confused

Looking at the concept video, I think there will be a significant difference. Perhaps not for the sole purpose of sitting, the event platform might we'll be superior for this, but the current tailgate has other uses aside. For me, it makes life easier and safer for transporting dogs, loading and particularly unloading logs, plus numerous other uses all of which have been listed in recent months.

As I said though, I'm trying to remain optimistic that the event platform will be a good alternative. Thumbs Up

DG: If all you need is a seat, then you won't notice the difference. It'll give you somewhere to contemplate the several thousand pound's that LR parted you with for the option (for something that used to be free).

However, if you want to use it for the 101 other uses that the lower tailgate had, from somewhere safe to stand to unload from the roof, to somewhere to put a bicycle to a decent working height to pump the tyres up then, yes, I think you'll notice the difference.
