EU interferes AGAIN: Halogen lightbulbs BANNED in UK

Quote:

EU interferes AGAIN: Halogen lightbulbs BANNED in UK by Brussels.

HALOGEN spotlights are to be phased out from today under EU plans to crack down on inefficient

The EU is encouraging people to switch to the more efficient LED lights

Consumers could begin to find it harder to buy halogen spotlights from now on as stock runs out, but a wider ban on halogen bulbs such as candle or traditional-shaped bulbs will not be introduced until 2018.

Halogen bulbs are more expensive to run than other energy-saving bulbs, use a similar amount of energy as traditional incandescent light bulbs and generally last for less than two years.

The changing regulations aim to encourage consumers to shift to LED lamps, which cost much less to run than traditional light bulbs.

I wish they would leave consumers to make an informed choice.

I have LED bulbs & floodlights, but I also have Halogen & Fluorescent bulbs where these are appropriate.

I have yet to do the maths; but it doesn't seem very "green" to scrap perfectly good fluorescent bulbs, to replace with LEDs, particularly as in some places new fittings will be required.

Again I have a stack of these:-

which I am reluctant to replace. Banging Head

It's pathetic. Rolling Eyes

When LEDs are truly able to replace the function of a filament bulb, people will gladly buy them and costs will be lower. Banning halogen bulbs simply leaves those who have good reason for such a bulb screwed (or bayoneted Razz ) and costs of LEDs inflated.

When will these people learn just to leave things alone! Mad

It matters that human stupidity is in the vacinity, and I'm sure you'd be the first person to advocate sympathy for other's misfortune, but yes, hopefully it won't. As expected, the decision is still looking better by the day. Razz

But, as other readers of the Daily Express should note .... we haven't left yet Whistle

At the gaff I've changed as many light units as possible to LED's ....saved a fortune over other lamps and power no doubt ...LED reliability is now significantly better than when the first came out.

Reliability is OK, but light quality is still poor on the vast majority of bulbs and the aesthetics different and focal points wider. Enough that people should have the choice, and for people like photographers, very important.

There's no need, and it is not helpful, to ban halogen and incandescent bulbs though at any rate. The benefits of LEDs are self-evident; they will sell themselves and should be left to do so. A ban just inflates the price and reduces the demand for technological improvement.

for me reliability isn't the issue, its the spread and type of light that LED lamps put out. It still doesnt match halogen (or even incandescent) lamps in some cases - its too direct and too harsh for my liking.

Maybe check the range they have at City Electrical Factors or similar ...much broader range of units than you'll find in the likes of B&Q Smile

The gaff is grade 2 listed and it had been a bit difficult to source appropriate candle shaped LED lamps for the chandeliers in the various lounges ...but recently I've found exactly the colour temperature and wattage I needed, so they are being trialled next week Smile

ecoled do some nice led lights. I have some in a shower room and the kitchen. I've also replaced most bulbs with LED and find them excellent. You just have to buy the right ones, and find the temperature you like. Thumbs Up

I have a similar problem.

I have found that the Bell G9 range fits in quite/very well in a number of wall lights & chandeliers in my ancient house.

I'm currently trying to source decent LED G9 capsules to see whether they work as well as the Halogen capsules I am using at present.

Even with the many bulbs around, there's a very poor showing on CRI. These people have got the right idea, but very limited ATM: http://store.yujiintl.com/collections/vtc-...1157451785
