United Kingdom 2016 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Lux Auto Corris GreyDiscovery 4

Shocked flipping heck glad your all ok.

Only ever experienced snaking once in the previous D4 at 50mph with a twin axle Ifor, bet it wasn't half as bad as what you experienced but I crapped myself! I let it coast with no pedal contact and thankfully it sorted its self out. Pulled into next services and found a tyre half flat on the trailer. I put it down to that and its never happened since. Touch wood!

Re your decision, obvious answer is get another disco preferably a D4 with the stability control given what you tow. Great deals on run out D4s at the moment Thumbs Up

Hi nigel207

Yes your right. IF I had been doing just 5 - 10 mph slower it wouldn't have happened but have used Discos 1,2 and 3 series with series 2 and 3 and Defender before and never a problem. Perhaps it was over confidence but I think that the trailer balance was wrong as has been said.

Snakes are usually caused by a combination of things. In this case, possibly a bit too quick and the boat not in its usual position, hence shifting the load.

Whatever, I'm sure it won't happen to you again, but as I said before, the main thing is that you are all ok.

If it's any consolation, when I was 18, I overturned a caravan (badly loaded etc, etc, in the days of ignorance about these things, when the thought was to accelerate out, which is probably the most dangerous thing that you can do!). MANY years later, I now spend a week at MIRA each year sliding cars and caravans about, having fun (and the odd scary moments) in the name of testing! I bought both my D3 and D4 on the back of that testing. Bottom line is that there's nothing better in the heavyweight class!

Wow that is quite dramatic!
Glad you are both ok, cars and boats can be replaced.
I would first buy a lottery ticket closely followed by a new Disco Thumbs Up

That's scary and I'm very glad you got away from it. Definitely the car stood up to the impact very well. Looks like a long slide on the side, with a heavy impact after she tipped over, to the underside of the front, hence bending the front up like its just done a Dukes of Hazard style jump!

Like said, probably incorrect loading on the trailer ultimately caused it, but I guess you will never know for sure.

Main thing is your ok.

Whilst I am no expert in towing, I do tow a horse trailer.

Its amazing the effect that a downhill section of motorway has on a trailer. I regularly travel the M40, and on the downhill section between J5 and J6 through the Stokenchurch Cutting I have seen a number of trailer accidents, one of which happened in front of me. (see photos).

There is a similar long downhill stretch that is closer to my home on the M5 between J4a and J5, in the summer there are regular caravan overturn accidents on that stretch.

The increase in speed downhill must combine with a change in balance of the whole outfit.

As most of the heaviest UK caravans are "only" 2000kg max weight, that boat and trailer are 1/2 as much again, so even though a lot of us tow big twin axle 'vans, we wouldnt have experienced being pushed like that. I've just done 2000mile towing the 'van down to the south of France, and whilst adhering to the 90kph of the downhill sections, there were one or 2 where I didnt and never felt like I was being "pushed".

As others have said, you walked away, its only a bit of metal and that can be replaced. Biggest injury at the time was probably to your pride.

Glad you are both OK. - Buy another Disco Thumbs Up

Hope you weren't using a detachable tow bar Shocked
