How to find and change Brake Pedal Switch

So I recently got the HDC faults with bongs and dash Christmas Tree lights and after checking on here found out that it could be the Brake Pedal Switch, I didn‘t know where it was located or what it looked like, so after a bit of help and a few seraches managed to change it out Thumbs Up

You will need:
- Phillips Screw Driver
- Small Screw Driver
- 1 x Replacement Switch MY2008 model P/N = XKB500110

Here‘s a few pics from today‘s job, will hopefully make life a bit easier for others on here with the same issue

1st you need to pull the panel off under the steering column, it will come out quite easily (Ignore that little box, it‘s my twin battery controller)

Once done it allows you to see what‘s behind

Again ignore all the cables

You should also now be able to see the brake switch through the hole on the right side

Remove this whole panel and put it somewhere safe

Next there will be two phillips head screws that need to be loosened on the bottom panel
Right side

Left side

I couldn‘t actually remove this panel, but was able to move it enough to put my hand through the gap and reach up to grab the old switch hard and turn it clockwise, it should then pop out.

Once it‘s out, pull it through and remove the electical connector - I used a small std screw driver

Old and new swtiches

Now take the new switch and plug in the electrics, before trying to put it back in

....It‘s essentially a reverse of the above steps, but be warned you do need bendy hands to do this, took three times as long to get the switch seated correctly before I was able to lock it in by turning it anti-clockwise - it needs to lock in and sit properly, it can only go in one way, but make sure its fully in Thumbs Up

All done and you can see the new one in place

All you now need to do now is lock the bottom panel with a phillips screw driver and push the front panel back into place

Hope this helps Thumbs Up

Good job. Thumbs Up

One important note to add, Iggy:

Do not release the plunger before fitting it, and be sure that the brake pedal is not pressed when the plunger is released - it can be enough to damage the switch, and you're then back to square one. Thumbs Up

I'd also put those cables back inside somewhere, I'm sure they'll chafe if you leave them dangling out the door like that Iggy Whistle

looking at both side by side it appears the blue body part of old switch has broken or worn away, did you check it over to find out where it failed ??

As a follow up make sure the switch is fully engaged in the bracket. Otherwise the lights will come back on again.

Thanks Mr H, didn't think about that Whistle

@ Sean, i've added an additional comment Thumbs Up

@ Popelca - no obvious signs of how it ended up like this, it seemed to look ok besides the marks you mentioned

Yep, the switch is self-adjusting so if not installed with the correct technique it can cause all sorts of issues.

Installation

Quote:
CAUTION : The brake pedal MUST NOT be depressed during this operation. Failure to comply will result in damage to the stoplamp switch.

1. Install the stoplamp switch.
Rotate the switch counterclockwise.
Connect the electrical connector.

2 . Install the closing trim panel.
Connect the electrical connector.
Secure the clip.
Tighten the screws.

I have just done this over the weekend to cure an intermittent fault (car into limp mode).

I purchased a new XKB500110 switch and installed at the weekend. However I noticed when I took out the old switch, the plunger on the new switch looked the same as the old one. i.e. it was not in its retracted position. it came out the box like that Evil or Very Mad

Since I had the part out - I replaced with the new part anyway but I'm wondering, based off the comments above - it that was a mistake.

If I install the new switch and the plunger was released before fitting then is that likely to be foobar already ? ( Car seems OK but my fault was very intermittent previously)

They should both look the same when you take the old one out. The action of removing/installing the switch locks/releases the plunger so it then sits in the right place. That's why you should NOT press the pedal while installing.

So they both looked like this :

i.e. the plunger sticking out.
