On the other note. Since that start/stop how close to advertised 36MPG is the new Discovery?

I don't take the blindest bit of notice of official test results and claims. I simply take one for a decent test drive and re-set the trip computer at the start.

After just under 70 miles, starting with a cold engine and driving within the speed limits, keeping it to 70 on the dual carriageway, 50 to 60 on the A roads, with some land driving and no traffic (it's Cornwall), it came to 30.6 mpg.

That would only work if the mpg display was accurate.

True, but I'm comparing it with the read out on the Freelander, which would have reported around 33-34mpg for the same drive.

I was driving it very gently, I would expect it to have been a lot worse if I'd been in a hurry....

I remember getting my first MPG computer, in a Citroen XM and comparing it with the old fashioned way of doing it and over the full capacity of its 90 litre tank; the trip computer figure was bang on! I haven't bothered to check a computer since.

The D4 trip computer is notorious for being programmed to be overly optimistic, but it can be tweaked to be accurate.

we are a bit off-topic, but whilst on the mpg - my 2015 with stop/start does lower mpg than my 2010 without....I thought 8 speed box would improve things...I guess the engine is a bit tight to start with but getting 40 less miles per tank at the moment!

Now you've got me slightly worried....

I'm going to do a brim to brim test on the FL2 today and see how that performs.

so the question is - what sense does it make to pay extra 30-40K replacing old with a new version of same vehicle which is still bad on consumption compared to rivals?

I lost about 10% of my mpg when I had the revised 8-speed software installed. It does drive incredibly well with the revision, but it came at a cost.

Over the 27 months of ownership I have averaged just over 30 (true) mpg. This includes the relatively poor mpg for the first few months of running in, the peak of efficiency on the original software and the 10% drop.

Thumbs Up
