The illum circuit shown via the fets will be all the ancillary lighting including buttons. I would have thought that would have nothing to do with the dimming circuit that controls screen brightness. That signal probably comes from an ambient light sensor.
If you go to the D4 hidden menu, there is an item that shows the "ambient light sensor" voltage. It shows nothing at all on mine, which may suggest it comes across the CAN bus.

I wasn't expecting anything to show. There had been some discussion as to whether there was a PWM signal fed to the unit to control the illumination. The fact that the diagnostics show a sensor voltage suggests this isn't the case. The fact that there is no value shown at all suggests that it's a value fed across the (non existant) CAN bus. If it were either being read as a voltage with no sensor on the end, I would expect it to either read 0 or just float around. I hope I'm wrong and it's the same as the D3 and there's an equivalent pin that the D3 sensor can be connected to.
Found the setting for the fuel warning too. Next stop - DAB.

Hi Mick,
We are really living in a time where communication is important and also tricky.
Have now read 66 pages in a thread on D3/D4 bluetooth modules and also followed this thread. We missed each other on skype, so I am trying this way.
Now I think I am better off to know what I need.
Have bought a D4 screen which I will install.
Now I am interested in getting an offer from you on the following:
1 D4 bluetooth module
1 power cable from D3 loom to new D4 module
1 Fakra cable from DVD unit to new D4 screen
1 cable conversion from D3 connector to new D4 screen
1 cable from D4 screen update socket
Not needed as there are only two connections needed, again talk to Geoff and he can sort you out.

These can be got off ebay link here..http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Connects2-CT27AA...3f1d0d55b0.

No such thing you have to make one up from the pins I have suggested on the How to.

1 cable from D4 screen update socket
Not needed as you can't update the maps while the screen is fitted into the D3, It would have to be connected to a D4 for the maps to be updated and its vin dependent so just forget about it.

Thank you Mick for your advice.
I notice that nubber99 and wiggs earlier had a conversation on updating the D4 navigation.
There was never a final say if it is possible or not.
Wiggs is talking about a code from navtech but also that it is vin related.
But he is also saying that while trying at the dealer he applied an eastern europe map and apparently that worked.
Maybe there are some news on the issue of updating???
Screen needs to be in a D4 at the dealers and an update code purchased (vin related hence in a D4) to allow the maps to be updated, wiggs was showing how they do it Altox GSM FBH controller thread

So I guess then that as the unit does not know the VIN number of the car (at least on the diagnostics screen it says "VIN not received") that the update would fail, even if you did connect whatever device is used to update the sat nav to the screen when it was in a D3, as it could not compare the vehicle VIN with the purchased VIN.
Or possibly the VIN for a D3 may be invalid when you ask your friendly dealer, as it does not fall into the D4 VIN range, and hence you should not even be asking for such a thing.
That's a shame.
Thinking about it, it might be a bit of a blessing in disguise that the sat nav doesn't know the VIN number, as if the maps are tied to the VIN, then they would not work if you put the unit in another car. However I bet it's just the update routine that does the checking, and once the maps are in the car, it doesn't bother to check.

@Robbie any chance you can try fooling that with a torch to see if it is the case?
Ok, wife just came home and found me sitting in the car in the dark playing with a torch….
The dimming logic changes depending if you have the sidelights on or not. With them on it dims a few gradients straight away and is then more sensitive to light changes with quick brightness adjustment and a willingness to switch to night mode.
With the lights off it brightens to max and is less responsive to light changes but adjusts eventually.
The sensor is indeed the one below the Home Menu button.
From the way the system reacted and uses the headlight switch position suggests that this is probably a CANBUS feed to the screen.

Seems to be a lot of job to take the screen out from the D3 and find a D4 to take that screen out and put the other screen in. update and then reinstall everything.
Or is there another way to make it easier????

Is there a can bus feed to the screen ?? Wiring diagram is not showing one .
I suspect the can bus goes to the IHU/ radio and then from there to the screen via mostG4 Gone ...but not forgotten

I can think of a way - but it still requires a willing D4 owner who is willing to take his/her sat nav out and is somewhat unethical!

There is no direct feed and, as you say, suspect it is an indirect route. It could be from the control panel to the CJB then the screen or via the CANBUS/MOST route. The screen itself only has direct connections plus the MOST and FireWire.
