After spending a few days contemplating if a D4 sat Nav Screen from a 2010 D4 with hard drive would work in my D3 with some modifications.
After some discussions with Pete Bell , Wiggs and Robbie, I decided to give it go and see what or if needed to done to get it to work.
As some will know the D3 is 29 bit can and the D4 is an 11bit canbus system, so I thought it would be a none starter. But after looking through and tracing the wires on both the D3 and the D4 it turns out that none of the systems on the D4 screen needed to be connected to any canbus wires, and all goes through the MOST cables.
So after getting a screen and all the parts I need, connectors and wires I set about trying to fit the Nav system in my D3.
I did fit the D3 nav OEM system in my car shortly after I bought it, so I knew all the wires and connectors from that install, but what shocked me was how little needs to be changed to get the D4 nav working in the D3.
All it takes are four connections, plus the Gps connector to get it fired up and working.
The biggest job is getting the screen to fit in the same foot print as the D3 one, but after some modifications to both screens mounting plates. This is quite easy as both plates are removable and just needs the screw holes moving and drilled in the D3 screens mounting plate.
The D4 screens plastic surround needs to be modified to fit, but once done it looks like a factory fit.
What you get is the D4 maps, and of course this could be updated later, unlike the D3 maps. As for the rest of the screen modes you get full 4x4, Radio station selections, the phone and phone book, but this I have found to a bit hit and miss, just like if you did the RRS mod on the D3. But the phone still works great even when on this screen.
You can’t get the cd player to show up on screen but when you select this to play a cd it still plays ok.
I have not yet got my reversing camera to work as not sure what triggers it on the D4, but an after market GVIF unit might be the way to go.
So this is my next task.
This is just a quick note to say its possible to do and when I get time I might do a How to..
Below some pictures of it working.

Well done and I especially like the idea of being able to keep updated maps. I can see the market for D4 screens to blossom soon.

Well done
.... is the D4 Nav better than the D3 though
i.e. any faster/more accurate
If it is I'll add to my 'wish' list D4 Front upgrade/cut back wings n things 'taking a long time but getting there'.
D4 rear upgrade - Narpys helped with that bit
Flack for problem solving and D4 Bluetooth Install/ D4 Heated Steering wheel with Flappy paddles n BBS enabling kit
Disco Mikeys work - Serviced, EGR blanking and 4x4 software upgrade, 3 flash indicators.

Mick
I have a D4 GVIF unit somewhereClub Exped trailer
Club Timed Climate
Club Flappy paddle steering wheel
Club 300bhp
Club Prospeed test pilot/lab rat
Club National Luna Stella conditioner
My D3 system is still in place, I could have my D3 sat nav system working in 10 mins, all parts including the dvd drive under the seat are still there.
Thats the beauty of this mod, the D4 2010 screen contains a hard drive with the maps installed so this is the only thing that has to be changed and plumbed in.
